James W. Lyons, Dean of Student Affairs, Emeritus, and Norman W. Robinson, Associate Dean, Emeritus (and former acting Dean of Student Affairs), share personal recollections of the people and the challenges during their tenure from the 1970s through the 1990s. They recall the various positions they held and their areas of responsibilities. Their recollections cover different areas of student life: classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and residences. They share numerous stories and anecdotes regarding Stanford’s residential education program that is based on the concept of the student experience as a whole, not just in the classroom but also in all other aspects of campus life. They attribute the success of this program to the fact that the resident fellow positions were filled by faculty members. They describe the numerous residential models designed to accommodate a variety of student needs, and talked about changing times and how both student and parent expectations shifted. Issues they faced include coeducational housing, civil rights, gay rights, domestic partnership, substance abuse, sexual assault, voting, and cultural and economic sensitivities. Although many of the recollections are about serious issues, they both emphasize that in general they had a wonderful time working at Stanford and had a lot of fun over the years.
