Gene transcription has remained at the forefront of modern biomedical science due to genome-sequencing projects, the renewed interest in the role of chromatin, the availability of high-resolution structures of key parts of the transcriptional machineries and new insights into the physiological role of transcription. This collection of reviews, based on presentations at the Biochemical Society's 2005 Annual Symposium, provides an overview of the current state of research into gene expression-mechanisms.
