a| A visual record of U.S. Marine and island life during the interwar years on Guam in 1930. The album consists of numerous scenes on the island, including images of Piti, Apra Harbor, several beaches, various beach structures, town architecture and infrastructure, animal life and jungle settings. Several of the images of native islanders and portraits of Marines and other Americans are present as well. The majority of photographs depict life for the U.S. Marines, and detail their activities, such as military exercises, parades, artillery practice, and camping expeditions. They also show the Marine facilities, such as the barracks and other military structures, as well as a number of military vehicles, naval transports and Marine aircraft. A small portion documents a contemporary trip to China. [From dealer description]

a| The island of Guam became a territory of the United States after the Spanish-American War in 1898, and was of great strategic import to both Japan and the United States during World War II. As a result, the island suffered heavy damage during the American campaign to retake it in 1943 and 1944, and as a result these images comprise a useful record of Guam and America's military presence there prior to the war.
