- The collection contains more than 37,000 photocopies of original archives of more than 2200 legal cases from 11 county governments, Beijing Municipal Archives, and the Second Historical Archives, etc. from the Qing through the People's Republic, collected by Professor Philip C. C. Huang and Professor Kathryn Bernhardt at UCLA.

- Philip C. C. Huang and Kathryn Bernhardt are Professors of Chinese History at UCLA. Prof. Huang is the founding director of UCLA’s Center for Chinese Studies, and the founding editor of the journal Modern China. He pioneered the use of central and local archives (in conjunction with ethnographic surveys) to study China’s social, economic and legal history. In particular, he was the first scholar anywhere to exploit significant numbers of legal case records from Chinese local courts, and his books and articles on civil law in China have dramatically changed our understanding of that topic. Over twenty-five years of research and teaching, Professors Huang and Bernhardt amassed a unique collection of legal and administrative documents reproduced from Chinese archives. The collection is unique not only in size, but also in temporal, geographic, and topical scope. It includes some 2500 legal cases (and other records) from the Qing, Republican, and PRC eras, dating from the mid-eighteenth century down through the nineteen-eighties. These cases represent Sichuan, Taiwan, the Yangzi Delta, and the north China plain, and include rich evidence about both the countryside and several of China’s most important cities (Beijing, Chongqing, and Shanghai). They also represent every level of the judicial hierarchy, from the county level (the court of first instance) all the way up to the Republican government’s Supreme Court. The emphasis of the collection is matters related to civil law (i.e. inheritance, marriage, land transactions, debt, contractual disputes, etc.), reflecting the collectors’ recent research focus. Legal history aside, it promises to be exceptionally valuable for the study of China’s economy. But the collection also includes some criminal cases from both the Qing and the Republic; most of the criminal cases focus on adultery, illegal marriage, and the traffic in women, so they have particular value for the history of women, gender, and sexuality. There are also significant quantities of local administrative records related to questions of security, taxation, household registration, village governance, etc.
