Tales from the 7,000 Isles: Filipino Folk Stories offers insights into the people and culture of the Philippines through dozens of tales representing the nation's various islands, regions, and cultural-ethnic groups. Designed to provide educators with material with which to enhance curriculum and lesson plans, the stories open a gateway to a rich and unique cultural mix. The tales presented here are divided into animal stories, how and why stories, tales of enchantment, trickster tales, and scary stories. In them readers can discern not only the native Filipino culture, but the influences of the many peoples who have moved through and settled in the islands, most notably Malay, Chinese, and Spanish, but also Arab, Indian, and American. A brief history of the country, its people, and their cultural traditions is included, as are crafts, children's games, recipes, and color photos. Notes about the stories, a bibliography, and a glossary complete the volume.

6. A fire in my heart : Kurdish tales [2008]
- Edgecomb, Diane.
- Westport, Conn. : Libraries Unlimited, 2008.
- Description
- Book — xxix, 159 p., [8] p. of plates : ill. (some col.), maps ; 27 cm.
- Summary
-
There are estimated to be more than 40 million Kurds throughout the world today, with about 1/3 living outside of the Middle East and Kurdistan (a region that stretches over Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran). As a minority in these countries, the Kurds have struggled for independence throughout history and into recent times; and have often been oppressed, persecuted, and deported from their land. The purpose of this volume is to introduce readers to the Kurdish people, their cultural traditions, and their stories. This unique collection includes many tales never before published in English. It can serve as both a resource for educators and librarians who work with Kurdish children and their families abroad, and as a resource for storytellers, folklorists and scholars. Some twenty-five tales are presented, representing all regions of Kurdistan and the four main Kurdish dialects - from the Kurdish Cinderella story and animal stories to stories based on legendary figures (e.g., Rustim Ezal - the Kurdish Hercules) - organised by tale type. Many of these stories have been collected from contemporary Kurdish storytellers, with others translated and adapted from transcripts of oral tellings and small tale collections in the Kurdish dialect. Background information on the people, their history, their land, and their customs is provided, along with colour photos, a glossary, and sample recipes, crafts, and games.

- Altmann, Anna E.
- Westport, Conn. : Libraries Unlimited, 2006.
- Description
- Book — xxviii, 284 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.
- Summary
-
More than 80 traditional German tales to entertain, educate, and amaze. Many people are familiar with the German tales of the Brothers Grimm, but usually in the sugarcoated versions of picture books and Hollywood cartoons. In this book the reader will find some other sides to German folklore. Using primary German-language sources, Altmann has gleaned a wonderful assortment of authentic tales to enchant and educate audiences of all ages. This collection includes many favourite German tales, such as "Rapunzel", "Snow White", "Rumpelstiltskin", "Hansel and Gretel", and "The Bremen Town Musicians"; as well as lesser-known tales such as "The Seven Swabians" and "The Master Thief". There are tales for all kinds of listeners and readers - more than 80 stories in all, including tales that may shock or make the hair stand on end, as well as those that will intrigue or amuse. The stories are organized in four sections: animal stories (Tiergeschichten, largely fables); comic tales (Schwanke, which range from the silly to the outrageous); fairy tales (Zaubermarchen, or wonder tales); and local legends (Sagen, which include stories of ghosts and goblins, and religious legends). The book also includes background information and tale-type information on the stories, a description of German life during the 19th century, colour photos, a pronunciation guide for German terms, and traditional German recipes, making this a wonderful resource for introducing audiences to German culture and traditions.
