4. Revelations of a lady detective [1864]
- Hayward, William Stephens, author.
- London : The British Library, 2013.
- Description
- Book — 278 pages ; 19 cm
- Summary
-
Revelations of a Lady Detective is only the second novel ever published featuring a female detective and was pipped to the post by just 6 months by Andrew Forrester's The Lady Detective published in the same year, 1864 (republished by The British Library in 2012). These two are truly the pioneering lady detectives since there would be no other fictional female detectives after them for nearly 25 years. Mrs Paschal, the heroine of the novel, is a very different character from her predecessor. For a start, she is shown smoking on the front cover - smoking was considered very modern and daring for women, even in the late 19th century. She carries a Colt revolver, trails suspects and searches houses. This much racier female detective is equally inventive, intuitive and insightful as she works her way through a variety of cases involving theft, murder and kidnapping. The publication of this very rare novel will be welcomed by all fans of Victorian crime fiction.

A stunning literary thriller in the tradition of "Gorky Park" and the novels of John Le Carre. Smilla Qaaviqaaq Jaspersen is the daughter of a Danish doctor and an Inuit woman from Greenland. Raised in Greenland, she lives in Copenhagen and, as befits her ancestry, is an expert on snow. When one of her few friends, an Inuit boy, dies under mysterious circumstances, she refuses to believe it was an accident. She decides to investigate and discovers that even the police don't want her involved. But Smilla persists, and as snow-covered Copenhagen settles down for a quiet Christmas, Smilla's investigation leads her from a fanatically religious accountant, to a tough-talking pathologist, to the secret files of the Danish company responsible for extracting most of Greenland's mineral wealth. Finally, she boards a ship with an international cast of villains - and a large stash of cocaine - bound for a mysterious mission on an inhospitable island off Greenland. Detective Samantha Adams, whose Palo Alto beat usually covers petty crimes, is innocently thrown into a high-profile case that is more complicated than any she has faced before. A renowned reconstructive surgeon and a respected family man, Dr. Taylor was beloved and admired. But beneath his perfect facade was a hidden life--in fact, multiple lives. Dr. Taylor was married to three very different women in three separate cities. As the circumstances surrounding his death emerge, Detective Adams finds herself tracking down a murderer through a tangled web of marital deception and revenge. "New York Times" bestselling author Alice LaPlante's haunting and complex novel of family secrets dissects--with scalpel-like agility--the intricacies of desire and commitment, trust and jealousy.

The final book in Dolores Redondo's atmospheric Baztan trilogy, featuring Inspector Amaia Salazar. With masterful storytelling and a detective to rival Sarah Lund, this Spanish bestselling series has taken Europe by storm. It begins with a murdered child. It ends in a valley where nightmares are born. When Detective Inspector Amaia Salazar is called in to investigate the death of a baby girl, she finds a suspicious mark across the child's face - an ominous sign that points to murder. The baby's father was caught trying to run away with the body, whether from guilt or grief nobody can be sure. And when the girl's grandmother tells the police that the `Inguma' was responsible - an evil demon of Basque mythology that kills people in their sleep - Amaia is forced to return to the Baztan valley for answers. Back where it all began, in the depths of a blizzard, she comes face to face with a ghost from her past. And finally uncovers a devastating truth that has ravaged the valley for years.
