3. Stanford Pride Oral History Project, 2015-2019 (inclusive) [2015 - 2019]
- Description
- Sound recording
- Summary
-
The purpose of the Stanford Pride Oral History Project is to preserve narratives of the Stanford LGBTQIA community for teaching, learning, and research, to strengthen ties with Stanford alumni, and to engage alumni in documenting the community’s history. Interviews typically begin with questions about childhood, family background, and early education. Interviewees then explore topics related to identity, gender, and sexuality and discuss their experiences of LBGTQIA life at Stanford, their post-Stanford lives, and topics of their choosing. Finally, they offer advice for future members of the Stanford LGTBQIA community. The project steering committee was comprised of: Claude Baudoin, Anthony Lopez, Jessie Dubreuil, Raul Weho, Sunny Choi, and David Press. Jason Lin served as project coordinator. Project organizers have sought to capture the diverse history of the Stanford LGTBQIA community. Interviewees were recruited by Stanford Pride and Jason Lin (‘20). The project was begun in 2015 by Stanford Pride and revived in the summer of 2018 with generous funding from the Haas Center. It is part of the University Archives’ ongoing initiative to diversify the archives by acquiring, processing, and digitizing materials documenting Stanford women, the LGBTQIA community, and communities of color. Support for this and other Stanford Community History Toolkit projects was provided by the Stanford Associates, the Stanford Historical Society, and the Stanford University Archives.

- Summary
-
Includes the transcript of an oral history interview conducted with Wyman in 2011 as part of the Stanford Historical Society Oral History Project on Racial and Ethnic Diversity occurring in the late 1960s through the 1980s. The interview focused on the 1968 "Taking the Mic" event where Black students took the microphone from Provost Richard Lyman during a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. and presented ten demands to the university administration. Wyman commented that Stanford was ahead of the curve on ethnic diversity and gave Lyman, who became university president after Kenneth Pitzer, great credit for reforming the university from the inside. Wyman also discussed the difficulties faced by African American, Native American, and Alaska Native students. In 2021, an investigation undertaken by the Thacher School, a private boarding school in California, led to a report that alleged Wyman engaged in sexual misconduct and covered up the sexual misconduct of others during his tenure as headmaster there. That report can be read in full at https://thacher.myschoolapp.com/ftpimages/148/download/download_6223895.pdf. In addition to the oral history interview transcript, a print version of the report is also included in this collection.
