Digital geology and topography of the Charleston quadrangle, Charleston and Berkeley counties, South Carolina

"n November 1999, the U. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Coastal Carolina University, began a program to produce geologic maps of the nearshore regime off northern South Carolina, utilizing high resolution sidescan sonar, interferometric (direct phase methods) swath bathymetry, and seismic subbottom profiling systems. The study areas extends from the ~7m isobath to about 10km offshore (water depths <12m). The goals of the investigation are to determine regional scale sand resource availability needed for planned beach nourishment programs, to investigate the roles that the inner shelf morphology and geologic framework play in the evolution of this coastal region, and to provide baseline geologic maps for use in proposed biologic habitat studies."

"A preliminary geology coverage of the Piedmont and Blue Ridge in South Carolina has been compiled at 1:5000,000 scale and digitized as part of a patchwork of coverages for the analysis of regional and national geochemical patterns that may have environmental and resource implications. It was produced from other compilations that incorporate more detailed geologic maps as well as additional sources. The compilation is designed to meet short-term needs until better coverage of the regional geology is available."

"This report is a prototype product that provides subsurface geologic information in a variety of digital formats for a small segment of the South Carolina Coastal Plain. The preliminary stratigraphic database found in Chapter A is designed to present and store subsurface geologic and paleontologic data in a GIS environment for selected Dorchester County, South Carolina drill holes. The information presented in graphic and tabular form in the database also is presented in a non-GIS, widely distributed format, an Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) file, in Chapter C. This chapter (Chapter B) provides a variety of supplementary and background information for the stratigraphic database. The largest section in this chapter reviews the physical stratigraphy and biostratigraphy of the sedimentary units found in Dorchester County. Chapter D informally presents recent results of a palynostratigraphic examination of Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) sediments in Dorchester County and adjacent areas."

"This CD-ROM contains copies of the navigation and field sidescan sonar data collected during USGS Cruise 96005, conducted during 1-14 June, 1996. The cruise was a collaborative field program between researchers at Coastal Carolina University and the USGS, Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Woods Hole Field Center."

"A four-layer digital model of the groundwater system of the Cretaceous-age Coastal Plain aquifers of South Carolina was developed using the MODFLOW program by McDonald and Harbaugh (1988). Results of the study are described in a report by Campbell and van Heeswijk (in press). Although that report summarizes the data input to the model, detailed documentation of model input and model output has not been published. This report, which is a supplement to the report by Campbell and van Heeswijk (in press), provides detailed, electronic documentation of the model data."

"This report presents information gathered in geologic reconnaissance of the Carolina slate belt and its immediate surroundings. Information is given in digital maps of 18 individual 1:100,000 quadrangles, a digital compilation of simplified geology at 1:250,000 scale, cross sections, spreadsheets containing data on rock types and structure observed at almost 5000 field stations, and this text. Among lithotectonic units or belts of the southeastern Piedmont, the Carolina slate belt is anomalous, in that it is underlain by rocks of lower greenschist facies metamorphism that in general are only weakly deformed, in contrast to adjacent belts composed of complexly deformed high-grade metamorphic rocks and intrusive rocks. Regional units in the slate belt range in age from Late Proterozoic to Ordovician, but granites were intruded in Silurian-Devonian and Late Paleozoic times. Parts of the belt at the east side are covered by rocks deposited in a string of Mesozoic basins and by the onlap of Coastal Plain deposits. The oldest rocks in the slate belt occur in the northwest part, against the Milton belt. These make up a granite- greenstone complex that appears to be in continuity (across a border fault of minor displacement) with the Charlotte belt. Unconformably atop those rocks, and making up the eastern part of the belt through much of North Carolina, is the Virgilina sequence (informal term), consisting mostly of intermediate and felsic volcanic rocks, with local occurrences of clastic sedimentary rocks, and a few granitic intrusive bodies. The few zircon ages available date the Virgilina rocks at about 600 Ma."
