Focusing on the art of self-portraiture, this effortlessly engaging exploration of the lives of artists sheds fascinating light on some of the most extraordinary portraits in art history. Self-portraits catch your eye. They seem to do it deliberately. Walk into any art gallery and they draw attention to themselves. Come across them in the world's museums and you get a strange shock of recognition, rather like glimpsing your own reflection. For in picturing themselves artists reveal something far deeper than their own physical looks: the truth about how they hope to be viewed by the world, and how they wish to see themselves. In this beautifully written and lavishly illustrated book, Laura Cumming, art critic of the Observer, investigates the drama of the self-portrait, from Durer, Rembrandt and Velazquez to Munch, Picasso, Warhol and the present day. She considers how and why self-portraits look as they do and what they reveal about the artist's innermost sense of self -- as well as the curious ways in which they may imitate our behaviour in real life. Drawing on art, literature, history, philosophy and biography to examine the creative process in an entirely fresh way, Cumming offers a riveting insight into the intimate truths and elaborate fictions of self-portraiture and the lives of those who practise it. A work of remarkable depth, scope and power, this is a book for anyone who has ever wondered about the strange dichotomy between the innermost self and the self we choose to present for posterity -- our face to the world.

- Summary

An ambitious exploration of the self-portrait from its inception in the late fifteenth century to the end of the twentieth, this ground-breaking book moves beyond the constraints of art history. "Self Portrait : Renaissance to Contemporary" allows us to share an intimate encounter with great artists of the past. The artist once stood before a canvas and gazed into a mirror; we, in turn, stand before the canvas looking at what the artist saw in the mirror. For a moment, time and space are collapsed and we find a reflection of ourselves in the artist's eyes. With, 140 images from collections all over the world, from Van Eyck to Chuck Close, this book includes pioneering essays on self-portraiture by leading art historians as well as informative analyses of each of the paintings in the accompanying exhibition. The artists are shown constructing their identity, setting the scene for their life and times and above all showing themselves as creative individuals often captured in the act of conjuring their own image in the studio. Published to coincide with a new series on Channel 4, "Self-Portraits: The Me Generation" presented by art critic and broadcaster Matthew Collings and a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London from 20 October 2005 to 29 January 2006 and at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia from 17 February to 14 May 2006. Channel 4 will be screening a new three-part series about "Self Portraits: The Me Generation" to coincide with the publication and the National Portrait Gallery exhibition.

Me, Myself, I ? Artists? Self-Portraits will explore self-portraiture by artists based in Britain between 1722 and 2022. It will discuss the ways and traditions through which artists have presented themselves and how the genre has increasingly offered the means to take control and re-present oneself, often challenging society to re-think its social mores. It will provide an illuminating overview and contextual backstory to our current interest in self-representation and the selfie.00Self-portraits can go beyond the professional towards the personal, with self-examination offering both analysis and psychoanalysis. Some artists have made multiple self-portraits over time, reflecting on how we are subject to change. Others have explored issues they have identified with, including the agency of women or the breaking of taboos around sexuality. Self-portraiture has also been a way of promoting oneself, ensuring artistic survival and long-term recognition. Since the 1940s it has played an important role for artists in expressing the complexities of identity and post-colonialism in Britain.00Exhibition: RWA, Bristol, UK (09.04. ? 19.06.2022).
