A key to the long-term success of the photovoltaic (PV) industry is confidence in the reliability of PV systems. Inverters are the most commonly noted cause of PV system incidents triggered in the field. While not all of these incidents are reliability-related or even necessarily failures, they still result in a loss of generated power. With support from the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technologies Program, Sandia National Laboratories organized a Utility-Scale Grid-Tied Inverter Reliability Workshop in Albuquerque, New Mexico, January 27-28, 2011. The workshop addressed the reliability of large (100-kilowatt+) grid-tied inverters and the implications when such inverters fail, evaluated inverter codes and standards, and provided discussion about opportunities to enhance inverter reliability. This report summarizes discussions and presentations from the workshop and identifies opportunities for future efforts.

The authors define what they mean by a 30-year module life and the testing protocol that they believe is involved in achieving such a prediction. However, they do not believe that a universal test (or series of tests) will allow for such a prediction to be made. They can test for a lot of things, but they believe it is impossible to provide a 30-year certification for any PV module submitted for test. They explain their belief in this paper.

Dodecaphenylporphyrins with varying degrees of fluorination of the peripheral phenyl rings (FXDPPS) were synthesized as model compounds for studying electronic effects in nonplan~ porphyrins, and detailed electrochemical studies of the chloroiron(HI) complexes of these compounds were undertaken. The series of porphyrins, represented as FeDPPCl and as FeFXDPPCl where x = 4, 8 (two isomers), 12, 20,28 or 36, could be reversibly oxidized by two electrons in dichloromethane to give n-cation radicals and n-dications. All of the compounds investigated could also be reduced by three electrons in benzonitrile or pyridine. In benzonitrile, three reversible reductions were observed for the unfluorinated compound FeDPPC1, whereas the FeFXDPPCl complexes generally exhibited irreversible first and second reductions which were coupled to chemical reactions. The chemical reaction associated with the first reduction involved a loss of the chloride ion after generation of Fe FXDPPC1. The second chemical reaction involved a novel intramolecular electron transfer between the initially generated Fe(H) porphyrin n-anion radical and the final Fe(I) porphyrin reduction product. In pyridine, three reversible one electron reductions were observed with the second reduction affording stable Fe(II) porphyrin o - anion radicals for ail of the complexes investigated.

The Solar Energy Grid Integration Systems (SEGIS) initiative is a three-year, three-stage project that includes conceptual design and market analysis (Stage 1), prototype development/testing (Stage 2), and commercialization (Stage 3). Projects focus on system development of solar technologies, expansion of intelligent renewable energy applications, and connecting large-scale photovoltaic (PV) installations into the electric grid. As documented in this report, Advanced Energy Industries, Inc. (AE), its partners, and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) successfully collaborated to complete the final stage of the SEGIS initiative, which has guided new technology development and development of methodologies for unification of PV and smart-grid technologies. The combined team met all deliverables throughout the three-year program and commercialized a broad set of the developed technologies.

This document describes the original goals of the project to study the Vishniac Overstability on blast waves produced using the Z-Beamlet laser facility as well as the actual results. The proposed work was to build on earlier work on the facility and result in the best characterized set of data for such phenomena in the laboratory. To accomplish the goals it was necessary to modify the existing probe laser at the facility so that it could take multiple images over the course of 1-2 microseconds. Troubles with modifying the probe laser are detailed as well as the work that went into said modifications. The probe laser modification ended up taking the entire length of the project and were the major accomplishment of the research.

This research effort evaluates the impact of large-scale photovoltaic (PV) and distributed generation (DG) output on NV Energy’s electric grid system in southern Nevada. It analyzes the ability of NV Energy’s generation to accommodate increasing amounts of utility-scale PV and DG, and the resulting cost of integrating variable renewable resources. The study was jointly funded by the United States Department of Energy and NV Energy, and conducted by a project team comprised of industry experts and research scientists from Navigant Consulting Inc., Sandia National Laboratories, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and NV Energy.

Foam pervades our everyday lives: we use it to bathe and shave, it floats atop our beer, cappuccino and pie, and it can even infect our bodies in the form of viruses. Although we are able to manipulate foam in these and many other common practices, there is still much we do not know about this fascinatingly complex material. In this talk, some of the intriguing aspects of foam, which could not be predicted based on its constituent components, will be discussed. Some challenging aspects of foam characterization, which have impeded the development of a thorough understanding of the material despite over a century of investigations, will also be presented. Despite these challenges, there are some known aspects of foams and these will be outlined along with how today's modern tools are being utilized to tell us more about foam structure and dynamics. A brief introduction to Sandia's interest in foams will then be given, and some of the current research we are conducting to further those interests will be discussed. This work is focused on the preparation of 'model' organic foams for use in developing an understanding of how to tune their stability and rheological response. Finally, physical and chemical methods to stabilize the foam will be described and possible new directions for the work will be presented.

Sandia Labs' Z machine is the largest laboratory source of x-rays in the world. For the few nanoseconds of a Z Machine test, its electrical output equals the output of 50x the electrical generating stations of all the power plants on earth. The Z Machine complex encompasses an area roughly the size of a major college basketball arena. Originally created to validate nuclear weapons models, the Z Machine is also considered a "dark horse" in the race for viable fusion energy production. After the famous "arcs and sparks" photo of Z (a photo no longer possible after its refurbishment), this is a fast-motion video of workers completing Z's recent refurbishment.

Collaboration between Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico Biology Department resulted in the capability to train students in microarray techniques and the interpretation of data from microarray experiments. These studies provide for a better understanding of the role of stationary phase and the gene regulation involved in exit from stationary phase, which may eventually have important clinical implications. Importantly, this research trained numerous students and is the basis for three new Ph.D. projects.
