- Description
- Book — xiv, 426 p. ; 25 cm.
- Summary
-
This book proposes that Mark's Gospel was written in Rome in late 71 after the return of the feared Titus who had recently destroyed the Jerusalem Temple. Recognising that the use of emotional appeals was a prime contemporary rhetorical tool, it shows the Gospel to be an emotionally-charged text aimed at readers traumatised by years of persecution, fear of arrest and intra-community tensions over the forgiveness of those who had failed. It examines the political, social and religious situation and shows that the Gospel contains allusions to many recent events of concern to Christians. Mark stirs their fears and painful memories to move them to a new resolve, providing a model for them - Jesus, the first martyr for the gospel.

6. The rhetoric of the book of Judges [1996]
- O'Connell, Robert H.
- Leiden ; New York : E.J. Brill, 1996.
- Description
- Book — 541 p.
- Summary
-
This volume describes how the rhetorical devices used in Judges inspire its readers to support a divinely appointed Judahite king who endorses the Deuteronomic agenda to rid the land of foreigners, to maintain inter-tribal loyalty to YHWH's cult, and to uphold social justice. Matters of rhetorical concern interpreted here include the superimposed cycle-motif and tribal-political schemata, concerns reflected in the plot-layers of each hero story, the force of narrative analogy for characterization, the strategy of entrapment which foreshadows portrayals of Saul and David in 1 Samuel, and the relation between Judges' implied situation of composition and its compiler's intention. In addition to offering new insights into the rhetorical strategy of the Judges compiler, this book aims to illustrate a new method for understanding how plot-layered stories work.

- Description
- Book — 548 p.
- Summary
-
This text deals with the structure and meaning of the poems found in Job 3-42, 6. It is demonstrated that these poems exhibit a consistent pattern of cantos and strophes. The recurring structures often place the various thematic aspects of the texts in a different light. The analysis of the poems relates their rhetorical framework to the device of distant repetitive parallelism. These verbal repetitions appear to display distinct patterns and help to discover recurring and leading ideas. The final section offers a new theory on the demarcation of the (three) speech-cycles which give structure to chapters 4-31 and 38-41. This theory is of special importance for the interpretation of chapters 24-28. This work is intended to be of interest to those who are interested in the forms and meaning of classical Hebrew poetry.

- Lavik, Marta Høyland.
- Leiden ; Boston : Brill, 2007.
- Description
- Book — xvii, 274 p. ; 25 cm.
- Summary
-
This volume delivers an analysis of the persuasive artistry of Isaiah 18, i.e. how Isa 18 is designed in order to persuade an ancient audience. The analysis is pursued from four angles: the textual design, the motifs, the rhetoric of the text and finally, it is shown how the various strophes within each stanza of Isa 18 relate to one another. The present analysis demonstrates that Isa 18 is an example of Hebrew rhetoric, and that the text can be read as a coherent whole - even though the majority of scholars analysing Isa 18 have found this chapter confusing. In this volume, it is argued that Isa 18 is shaped in a confusing way in order to make the audience believe that someone else is judged (the Cushites, 18:1-2.7), and not themselves. This volume sheds new light on the understanding of and old text, and the volume is important for exegetes interested in the persuasive artistry of Isa 18.
