During her lifetime, Edith Wharton was America's most popular and prolific writer. The social chronicler of her age, her international reputation was secured by triumphs such as "The House of Mirth", "Ethan Frome", "The Custom of the Country", and "The Age of Innocence", a work for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1921. More recently, an explosion of scholarly research and a spate of Hollywood adaptations of her books have assured her place in the American novelistic tradition and the popular imagination. At her death in 1937, Wharton left behind a fascinating collection of unpublished work written throughout her lifetime.This is the first scholarly edition of this body of work. Largely unfinished, these unknown works include a dazzling novella penned when Wharton was only fourteen, two abandoned novels, three stage-plays, and frank life writings drafted late in her career. Several texts are works-in-progress for later, more renowned writings. The plays in particular open up a hitherto unexplored field of Wharton studies and allow scholars to adjust their assessment of her as a novelist. Copy texts are carefully chosen. This five-volume critical edition presents the lively and candid diary of Thomas Macaulay, Victorian statesman, historian and author of "The History of England". Spanning the period 1838 to 1859, the journal is the longest work from Macaulay's pen to remain unpublished. It is the most revealing of all his writings. These unique manuscripts are now held at Trinity College, Cambridge. They have never been published before. Macaulay was acutely aware of the verdict of posterity and never published anything he had not carefully revised and polished. But when he wrote the Journal, the masks were put aside. He knew the leading Liberal politicians, most importantly Lord Lansdowne, Lord Palmerston and Lord John Russell. He was closest to the writers and scholars who frequented the Athenaeum, like Dean Milman, Henry Hallam, George Cornewall Lewis, and the economist Nassau Senior. He knew Thackeray, Dickens, Carlyle (whom he disliked) and Bulwer Lytton. Through his Clapham sect connections he had ties with both the Church and the City; regularly dining with Bishop Samuel Wilberforce and his circle, and taking investment advice from the banker Henry Thornton.

Nikolai Dmitrievich Kondratiev (1892-1938) was a leading Soviet economicst and is known for his identification of the long wave of economic activity. In the Soviet Union Kondratiev established his reputation with his studies of the domestic and world economies. This four-volume edition contains a large selection of his work in translation. Kondratiev produced works on aspects of long waves, questions of methodology, economic dynamics, economic policy, and both the history of economic thought and economic history. Between 1920-28 Kondratiev was director of Moscow Business Conditions Institute, which he also founded. He was an author of the first five-year plan for agriculture in 1923-4 and an active participant in discussions on many issues. In 1928 he was removed from his post at the Institute and imprisoned and most of his ideas and practical proposals were rejected as "wrong and reactionary". He and his work have been rehabilitated since the end of the Soviet regime.

This critical edition of the poems of Anna Seward (1742-1809) re-establishes one of the most popular and prolific poets of the early Romantic period. Her work influenced Charllotte Smith and Mary Robinson and later both Wordsworth and Coleridge. Her reputation was so high that Sir Walter Scott edited the posthumous edition of her poems in 1810. Unlike Scott's, this edition reproduces the poems as they were first published in periodicals and collections during Seward's lifetime, allowing scholars to experience them as eighteenth century readers did. It also includes mire than 200 poems that were excluded from the Scott edition.

HMS Beagle has entered the collective imagination as the ship which carried Charles Darwin to the Galapagos Islands. There, he began to develop the theory of natural selection. However, the Beagle also played a vital role in the development of modern meteorology, hydrography and cartography. Her skipper, Captain Robert FitzRoy, was charged with the important tasks of ascertaining the longitude of Rio de Janeiro, from where all meridian distances in South America were measured, and charting the continent's coastline, much of which had not previously been mapped.To accomplish this, the Beagle carried cutting-edge navigation and surveying equipment. She was also the first ship to use Francis Beaufort's new system for measuring wind speed at sea, which is still in use today. Darwin and FitzRoy's accounts of the voyage were published in the four-volume "Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty's Ships Adventure" and "Beagle Between the Years 1826 and 1836" (1839). Darwin's volume was republished almost immediately and has never been out of print. By contrast, this new four-volume reset edition is the first critical version of FitzRoy's "Narrative".

Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant (1828-97) had a wide-ranging and prolific literary career that spanned almost fifty years. She wrote some 98 novels, over fifty short stories, twenty-five works of non-fiction, including biographies and historic guides to European cities, and more than three hundred periodical articles. As the self-styled 'general utility woman' for Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, often contributing both fiction and literary reviews to the same issue, she became a major critical voice for her generation. Her influence, usually cast on the side of 'the common reader', was such that it provoked fellow novelists such as Anthony Trollope, Henry James and Thomas Hardy to savage fictional portraits by way of retaliation.

• 'St Dunstan' (1790)This a five act tragedy which exists only in manuscript form in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. 'St Dunstan' represents Godwin's first response to the events of the French Revolution and is a fine example of the sort of historical tragedy prevalent on the London stage of the period.'Antonio-- or, The Soldier's Return' (1800)This play is a five act tragedy which was published in 1800 by G G Robinson. Godwin spent more time on this work than any other of his literary endeavours which indicates its importance to his oeuvre. One biographer states that he considered it his most important work. The play itself is an important reaction against the garish spectacles of the London theatre which Godwin felt denigrated the function of theatre and is closely associated with the politics of his collection of essays The Enquirer (1797).'Abbas, King of Persia' (1801)This five act tragedy which exists only in manuscript form in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Acts 4 and 5 are missing although there does exist a synopsis of the entire play in Godwin's hand. Although there are only three acts of this tragedy remaining, Abbas reveals a strong Shakespearean influence as well as being an excellent example of the London audience's taste for Orientalism. Godwin chose the play's topic at Coleridge's suggestion and there exists a fascinating correspondence between the two aspiring dramatists on the subject.Faulkener, A Tragedy (1807)This five act tragedy which was published by Richard Phillips in
• 1808. Faulkener represents Godwin's greatest success on the stage and in its conformity to the structure and themes of contemporary plays represents a growing pragmatism on Godwin's part of what was politically and artistically possible on the Georgian stage.

Best known for "Enquiry Concerning Political Justice" (1793) and "Caleb Williams" (1794), William Godwin (1756-1836) is one of the most important figures of the Romantic period. Godwin was an avid theatre-goer, making as many as 70 theatre trips in a season. He wrote four plays; "Antonio or, The Soldier's Return" (1800) and "Faulkener, A Tragedy" (1807) were published in his lifetime, whilst "St Dunstan" (1790) and "Abbas, King of Persia" (1801) exist only in manuscript.The plays cover a substantial period of Godwin's career and bracket his period of greatest fame and creativity. Until now, the plays have not been available in a modern scholarly format. Consequentially, they have not received as much critical attention as his novels and political writings. This modern critical edition is edited to the highest standards and offers academics the chance to build a more complete picture of Godwin as a writer and political figure. It will be essential for those studying Literature, Romanticism and History of the Theatre.
