This book is a major survey of the English newspaper and the way it developed from 1660 to the early eighteenth century, a crucial period in its long history. Professor Sutherland's approach is comprehensive and topics covered include: the administration of newspapers, their sources of information, the reliability of reporting, the contributions of country and foreign correspondents, and the extent to which papers were able to print political news and express political opinions in a period of government repression. A final chapter provides an account of the chaotic and often dangerous lives of newspaper men and women. The emphasis throughout falls on how much was actually achieved in difficult circumstances, and how often modern developments were anticipated. This will be a useful work of reference for scholars of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century literature, as well as for political and social historians.

This book explores the content of The Moderate, a radical newspaper of the British Civil Wars published in the pivotal years 1648-9. This newsbook, as newspapers were then known, is commonly associated with the Leveller movement, a radical political group that promoted a democratic form of government. While valuable studies have been published on the history of seventeenth-century English periodicals, as well as on the interaction between these newspapers and print culture at large, very little has been written on individual newspapers. This book fills a void: it provides an in-depth investigation of the news printed in The Moderate, with reference to other newspapers and to the larger historical context, and captures the essence of this periodical, seen both as a political publication and a commercial product. This book will be of interest to early-modern historians and literary scholars.

The first newspaper arrived in England in 1620 and sparked a huge demand for up-to-the minute reports on domestic and world events. Men and women in Renaissance England were addicted to news, whether from the battlefields of Europe, or the scandal-filled salons of its courtiers. Newspapers commented on politics, crime, omens, bad weather, natural disasters, and strange apparitions. "Breaking News" traces the development of the newspaper in England, from its origins in manuscript letters and imported corantos in Shakespeare's England, to the introduction of daily newspapers, regional journals, and specialist magazines around 1700, as well as the first stirrings of American journalism. The examples of early journalism illustrated here reveal the indelible mark the early English newspaper has left on modern news culture. Chris R. News Networks in Early Modern Europe attempts to redraw the history of European news communication in the 16th and 17th centuries. News is defined partly by movement and circulation, yet histories of news have been written overwhelmingly within national contexts. This volume of essays explores the notion that early modern European news, in all its manifestations - manuscript, print, and oral - is fundamentally transnational. These 37 essays investigate the language, infrastructure, and circulation of news across Europe. They range from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and from the Ottoman Empire to the Americas, focussing on the mechanisms of transmission, the organisation of networks, the spread of forms and modes of news communication, and the effects of their translation into new locales and languages.
