- [Updated ed.]. - New York : United Nations, 2006.
- Description
- Book — viii, 380 p. ; 24 cm.
- Summary
-
The United Nations congresses on the prevention of crime and the treatment of offenders have placed special emphasis on the general issues of criminal policy, in addition to dealing with specific aspects of crime prevention and criminal justice. It is broadly understood that crime and delinquency should not be interpreted as merely a problem of illegal behaviour and law enforcement but also as phenomena closely associated with economic and social development. The present compendium hopes to contribute to a wider knowledge and an increased awareness of United Nations crime prevention and criminal justice standards.

- Description
- Book — xv, 226 p. ; 24 cm.
- Summary
-
At the end of the 20th century, and at the dawn of the 21st, the United Nations was tasked with the administration of justice in territories placed under its executive authority, an undertaking for which there was no established precedent or doctrine. Examining the UN's legal and judicial reform efforts in Kosovo and East Timor, this volume argues that rather than helping to establish a sustainable legal system, the UN's approach detracted from it, as it confused ends with means.

- Book — xi, 205 p.
- Summary
-
Africa has been at the forefront of developments in international criminal justice. Several initiatives have targeted those responsible for serious human rights violations: the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the Special Court for Sierra Leone as well as the cases involving Hissene Habre, Colonel Mengitsu Haile Mariam and Charles Taylor. At the political level, support for ending impunity for those responsible for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity is also evident: the African Union's Constitutive Act commits member countries to stamping out impunity, and more than half of African states have ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). But for a continent that is home to many international human rights atrocities, the real challenge is converting this political commitment into awareness and implementation. To enhance the capacity of African countries to end impunity, this guide provides judges, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and government officials with an African-focused manual on international criminal justice, with an aim to ensure that international criminal justice is better understood and that African states are equipped to comply with their obligations under international law and the Rome Statute.
