The present collection was written to commemorate the third centenary of the death of the Portuguese Jesuit, Tomas Pereira (1645-1708). Dealing with some of the most decisive and controversial moments in the history of the Jesuit mission in China during the Kangxi era (1662-1722), these essays were produced by an international team of scholars and cover a wide range of topics that reflect a permanent academic interest, in Europe and America as well as in China, in the history of the Catholic mission in China, Sino-Russian diplomacy, the history of Western science and music in China, intercultural history, and history of art. While the names of such missionaries as Matteo Ricci, Adam Schall and Ferdinand Verbiest are well known, Pereira has been relatively neglected, and this volume seeks to redress that imbalance. Pereira was important as a musician and diplomat and was closer to the Kangxi emperor than any other Westerner, something that enabled him to exert considerable influence for the protection of the Chinese Christians and also to further the interests of Portugal in China. However, towards the end of his life he saw his efforts undermined by the damaging consequences of the papal legation to China led by Charles-Thomas Maillard de Tournon.

In Companions in Geography Mario Cams revisits the early 18th century mapping of Qing China, without doubt one of the largest cartographic endeavours of the early modern world. Commonly seen as a Jesuit initiative, the project appears here as the result of a convergence of interests among the French Academy of Sciences, the Jesuit order, and the Kangxi emperor (r. 1661-1722). These connections inspired the gradual integration of European and East Asian scientific practices and led to a period of intense land surveying, executed by large teams of Qing officials and European missionaries. The resulting maps and atlases, all widely circulated across Eurasia, remained the most authoritative cartographic representations of continental East Asia for over a century. This book is based on Dr. Mario Cams' dissertation, which has been awarded the "2017 DHST Prize for Young Scholars" from the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, Division of History of Science and Technology (IUHPST/DHST).

"Né à Dole en Franche-Comté, Jean-Denis Attirer (1702-1768) se prend de passion dès l'enfance pour le dessin et la peinture ; son talent éveille alors l'intérêt d'un mécène qui l'envoie étudier à Rome. De retour en France, il entre par vocation au noviciat jésuite d'Avignon où il est choisi pour partir en Chine. Il y retrouvera le père Amiot et travaillera en étroite collaboration avec le peintre italien Giuseppe Castiglione. Très apprécié de l'Empereur Qianlong, il devient un de ses peintres officiels autorisé à le rencontrer presque quotidiennement ! A travers le parcours d'un artiste du XVIIIe siècle, voici retracée l'aventure des Jésuites de la première mission chinoise, initiée au siècle précédent par Matteo Ricci. Comme tous ces "passeurs de culture" : mathématiciens, astronomes, scientifiques, historiens, botanistes, peintres, horlogers, Jean-Denis Attiret a contribué aux premiers véritables échanges entre l'Orient et l'Occident. In this volume, Hui Zou analyzes historical, architectural, visual, literary, and philosophical perspectives on the Western-styled garden that formed part of the great Yuanming Yuan complex in Beijing, constructed during the Qing dynasty. Designed and built in the late eighteenth century by Italian and French Jesuits, the garden described in this book was a wonderland of multistoried buildings, fountains, labyrinths, and geometrical hills. It even included an open-air theater. Through detailed examination of historical literature and representations, Zou analyzes the ways in which the Jesuits accommodated their design within the Chinese cultural context. He shows how an especially important element of their approach was the application of a linear perspective to create the jing, the Chinese concept of the bounded bright view of a garden scene. Hui Zou's book demonstrates how Jesuit metaphysics fused with Chinese cosmology and broadens our understanding of cultural and religious encounters in early Chinese modernity.
