The essays presented in this book represent a series of explorations in the social and religious history of France's Huguenots between the Edict of Nantes and its revocation. This book investigates the history of the Huguenots: how the community evolved numerically and sociologically in the face of intensifying pressure to return to the Catholic church; the nature of huguenot identity; the religious psychology, cultural practices and mental world of the group and its members. It also studies marital customs, moral beliefs, social mobility and wealth accumulation. The author explores whether there was a link between Calvinism and capitalism, as German sociologist Max Weber believed. He looks at whether the Huguenots displayed a greater inner-wordly asceticism or more of an aptitude for economic success than their Catholic neighbours. There is an investigation of the Protestant and Catholic visual cultures and a look at their behaviours and customs.

The Huguenots formed a privileged minority within early modern France. During the second half of the sixteenth century, they fought for freedom of worship in the French 'wars of religion' which culminated in the Edict of Nantes in 1598. The community was protected by the terms of the Edict for eighty-seven years until Louis XIV revoked it in 1685. The Huguenots therefore constitute a minority group tolerated by one of the strongest nations in early modern Europe, a country more often associated with the absolute power of the crown - in particular that of Louis XIV. This collection of essays explores the character and identity of the Huguenot movement by examining their culture and institutions, their patterns of belief and worship and their interaction with French state and society. The volume draws upon research by leading historians and specialists from across Europe and North America.

This lucid and wide-ranging survey is the first study in English to identify a distinctive urban phase in the history of the early modern crowd. Through close analysis of the behaviour of protesters and authorities in more than fifteen seventeenth-century French cities, William Beik explores a full spectrum of urban revolt from spontaneous individual actions to factional conflicts, culminating in the dramatic Ormee movement in Bordeaux. The 'culture of retribution' was a form of popular politics with roots in the religious wars and implications for future democratic movements. Vengeful crowds stoned and pillaged not only intrusive tax collectors but even their own magistrates, whom they viewed as civic traitors. By examining in depth this interaction of crowds and authorities, Professor Beik has provided a central contribution to the study of urban power structures and popular culture.

This book is an accessible and comprehensive study of the French wars of religion, designed specifically for undergraduate students. Drawing on the latest scholarship of a generation of social historians of the Reformation, the author presents a new analysis which goes beyond the partisan politics of noble factions and socio-economic tensions of early modern society. He argues that this long conflict was fomented by religious tensions among the population at large. While politics and socio-economic tensions were doubtlessly important, this book focuses on the social history of religion. By analysing the conflict as a cultural clash between two communities bent on defining the boundaries between the sacred and the profane in explicitly different ways, the author attempts to explain why the wars lasted for so long and why they ended in the way that they did.

"Avocat prospère à Nîmes, puis réfugié aux Pays-Bas où sa famille fera souche, Claude Brousson aurait pu se contenter d'être un de ces bourgeois du Refuge dénonçant les persécutions de Huguenots. Il choisit de retourner prêcher en France au risque de sa vie pour organiser et animer par l'exemple la résistance évangélique aux abus du pouvoir royal. Parcourant des centaines de kilomètres à pied, il participe à plus de 200 assemblées clandestines ; il écrit des milliers de pages qu'il fait publier au Refuge où il retourne régulièrement pour intéresser ses soutiens à son combat pour la foi et la liberté de conscience. Dénoncé et arrêté en 1698, il sera jugé pour sédition et roué et étranglé en place publique. Quelques années plus tard éclatera la sanglante guerre des Camisards... "Ce livre présente la première biographie d'Auguste II Galland (1572-1637), en focalisant sur la carrière et l'action politiques de ce juriste protestant. Issu de la bourgeoisie de Tours, Galland fut, dans le sillage de son père, maître des requêtes (1590), puis conseiller d'État de Navarre (1603) d'Henri IV qui l'employa comme avocat (1596), puis comme procureur général (1606) de l'ancien domaine de Navarre au parlement de Paris. Galland fut également lieutenant du bailli de l'Arsenal de Paris à partir de 1599. Ses services, prolongeant ceux de son père, lui valurent l'anoblissement graduel (1610), puis l'office de bailli de l'Arsenal (1615). Devenu conseiller d'État de France (1620), il fut commissaire du roi, chargé de faire respecter la volonté de Louis XIII aux synodes nationaux des Églises réformées de France (1623-1631) et de convaincre ses coreligionnaires de Languedoc de ne pas prendre les armes contre le roi pendant le siège de La Rochelle (1627-1628). Le commissaire Galland se fit connaître dans tout le royaume mais la postérité n'a gardé de lui que l'image d'un juriste érudit, spécialiste des domaines royaux. Cette biographie montre que l'importance politique du conseiller d'État devait beaucoup à cette érudition, pourvoyeur inépuisable d'arguments précieux au service du roi, aussi bien à l'intérieur qu'à l'extérieur des frontières du royaume. Adversaire de la révolte du duc de Rohan et défenseur des droits de ses coreligionnaires comme l'indiquent les documents édités ici pour la première fois, Galland fut un Politique protestant qui oeuvrait pour le "bien de l'État" et le "repos du public" au cours de la dernière guerre de religion. How did the Huguenots of Paris survive, and even prosper, in the eighteenth century when the majority Catholic population was notorious for its hostility to Protestantism? Why, by the end of the Old Regime, did public opinion overwhelmingly favour giving Huguenots greater rights? This study of the growth of religious toleration in Paris traces the specific history of the Huguenots after Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes in 1685. David Garrioch identifies the roots of this transformation of attitudes towards the minority Huguenot population in their own methods of resistance to persecution and pragmatic government responses to it, as well as in the particular environment of Paris. Above all, this book identifies the extraordinary shift in Catholic religious culture that took place over the century as a significant cause of change, set against the backdrop of cultural and intellectual transformation that we call the Enlightenment.
