Topics include the construction of the Central Pacific railroad, shipping and aviation. Includes the papers of men connected with Central and Southern Pacific and subsidiaries, and United Railroads of San Francisco. Also includes letters from Collis P. Huntington to Mark Hopkins, Leland Stanford, A. Cohen and others.

Collection includes correspondence (1804-1805, 1885-1935), daybook (1889-1928), newsclippings, and miscellaneous publications regarding the Hopkins family (1885-1935). Correspondence focuses on family matters, including the Hopkins-Searles Probate Case, Hopkins' retirement and death, and gifts to Stanford. There is also some correspondence about University matters (1896-1910). Collection also contains photographs, diplomas, memorial resolutions, published genealogies for John Hopkins and the Kellogg family, and a scrapbook kept by Hopkins of clippings on general topics, 1870-1883.

Collection is composed of autograph letters of prominent colonial, revolutionary, and early American figures which are interleaved in the five volume work by Washington Irving, LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON. The letters were bound into the work by R. W. Smith in 1878-1879 for Timothy Hopkins.

Hopkins" who was the Rev. Daniel Hopkins of Salem, Massachusetts, a brother to Rev. Samuel Hopkins; Brown Emerson, son-in-law of Rev. Daniel Hopkins; Rev. Holland Weeks, son-in-law of Moses Hopkins; Mrs. Mary Ridgeway, sister of Mrs. Elizabeth Hopkins, and Mary's daughter, also Mary Ridgeway, later married twice, first as Mary Barrett, and later as Mary Horsman.
