"Décembre 2008. L'armée israélienne lance l'opération Plomb durci dans la bande de Gaza. The book reproduces a set of drawings by English artist, Peter Rhoades with a foreword by Professor Avi Shlaim. The drawings were made as a response to media coverage of the Israeli attack on Gaza "Operation Cast Lead" in 2008-9. Rhoades was appalled by the overwhelming violence, destruction and suffering being imposed by a military superpower on a virtually defenceless population. An attack of even worse severity was mounted subsequently in 2014. The drawings were made spontaneously and viscerally in face of press photography and texts. The issues involved in the conflict were brought into focus for the artist at the time by an article in the Guardian newspaper by Professor Avi Shlaim and this led to Rhoades showing the drawings to Professor Shlaim in Oxford. The drawings are intended as a tribute to the sufferings and deprivations of Palestinians in Palestine/Israel and elsewhere.

In the familiar atmosphere of hue and cry, Violence and Understanding in Gaza encourages its readers to think for themselves when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As the first comprehensive investigation of the British broadsheets' coverage of the armed conflict between the State of Israel and Hamas, Kaposi critiques the newspapers' output, arguing that they without exception merely replicate the black and white logic of war. He contends that the newspapers defeat their own aims about a two-state solution based on compromise. For that to happen, the British media must in future cease to write about the conflict as if it were a mythical contest between Good and Evil. Instead of asking who is innocent and who should be blamed, it should start to treat the conflict as a story of mutually painful but very real human relations. Any meaningful political-moral criticism can only start from that position.

The Goldstone Report is one of the most controversial UN reports ever published. It alleges that both Israel and Hamas committed atrocities when Israel invaded Gaza in January 2009 as a part of Operation Cast Lead. Justice Richard Goldstone, a celebrated South African and Jewish human rights lawyer, oversaw the UN fact-finding mission after the invasion. What Goldstone found, and later published, caused a maelstrom within Israel and the international community at large. Goldstone was demonized by many who claimed bias, intimating the report unfairly vilified Israel. Though the findings are of enormous historical, political and moral significance, few have actually read the document in its entirety-thus the furious political debate that mushroomed in the wake of its publication has supplanted any true understanding of the report's discoveries. The Israeli offensive in Gaza was described by Amnesty international as '22 days of death and destruction'. Sharyn Lock's eyewitness account brings home the horror of life in Gaza beneath the bombs. Sharyn went to the Gaza strip with the Free Gaza Movement, thinking the greatest danger she faced was making it past the Israeli sea blockade in a fishing boat, but soon after her arrival Israel attacked Gaza's 1.5 million inhabitants by land, air and sea.
