Chi-yŏn is a successful lawyer and a single mother to a seven-year old girl. On her daughter's field day, her daughter is kidnapped and she has to fight against a kidnapper to rescue her daughter in seven days. To see her daughter alive, she needs to prove that the convicted murderer is not guilty. She tries to convince herself the murderer should be innocent, but the victim's mother makes her understand what drove crime to crime.

The film is set during the Japanese occupation of Korea in 1943 telling the story of 14-year old Jung-min and 16-year old Young-hee. Jung-min's family is poor due to frequent warfare but lives happily and peacefully. Young-hee's parents died during the war so she has to take care of her younger brothers. One day, Japanese soldiers forcefully take the two girls from their homes giving them just minutes to say goodbye and pack their clothes, ship them to Manchuria in wagons for livestock and use them as 'comfort women' forcing them to perform sexual service to the servicemen of the Imperial Army.

This movie is about a major anti-Japanese demonstartion in a number of high schools in Gwanju druing 1929 when Korea was under Japanese rule. It started after October 30, 1929 when Japanese students in Naju train station intentionally harassed some Korean female students.
