By the end of the eighteenth century a distinctly modern vision of life was emerging. The revolutions in America and France revealed new beliefs about human nature, rights and duties, the natural and material worlds, and a new faith in science, technology and the idea of progress. "Ce volume est le reflet d'un atelier qui s'est tenu à Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) du 16 au 19 septembre 2009. Cette rencontre est née du désir de réunir des chercheurs intéressés par la problématique de la circulation des idées comme des personnes entre la France, l'Italie et la péninsule ibérique au cours du XVIIIe siècle. Nous avons utilisé le terme "Lumières" dans son acception philosophique élargie et courante, tout en rappelant que les "Lumières" ont aussi signifié un ensemble de valeurs associées à un espace géographique précis, celui de la France. Toutefois, dans un sens comme dans l'autre, nous avons choisi une approche souple : en mettant entre parenthèses la référence commune de Paris en tant que point central de diffusion des Lumières, mais aussi en optant pour le décloisonnement des disciplines. En somme, nous avons privilégié une perspective dans laquelle l'Italie, l'Espagne et le Portugal sont appréhendés comme des centres actifs des Lumières. Il est apparu tout au long de nos discussions que cette effervescence intellectuelle se donne à voir autant dans la philosophie que dans l'histoire culturelle. Pursuing special experiences that take them to the brink of permanent madness or death, men and women in every age have "returned" to heal and comfort their fellow human beings - and these shamans have fascinated students of society from Herodotus to Mircea Eliade. This study describes the first Western encounters with shamanic peoples and practices. The author views the 18th century as an age in which explorers were fascinating all Europe with tales of shamans who accomplished a "self-induced cure for a self-induced fit". Reports from what must have seemed a forbidden world of strange rites and moral licentiousness came from botanists, geographers, missionaries and other travellers of the period. These accounts created such a stir that they permeated cafe talk, journal articles and learned debates, giving rise to plays, encyclopaedia articles, art and operas about shamanism.

The Enlightenment that Failed explores the growing rift between those Enlightenment trends and initiatives that appealed exclusively to elites and those aspiring to enlighten all of society by raising mankind's awareness, freedoms, and educational level generally. Jonathan I. Israel explains why the democratic and radical secularizing tendency of the Western Enlightenment, after gaining some notable successes during the revolutionary era (1775-1820) in numerous countries, especially in Europe, North America, and Spanish America, ultimately failed. He argues that a populist, Robespierriste tendency, sharply at odds with democratic values and freedom of expression, gained an ideological advantage in France, and that the negative reaction this generally provoked caused a more general anti-Enlightenment reaction, a surging anti-intellectualism combined with forms of religious revival that largely undermined the longings of the deprived, underprivileged, and disadvantaged, and ended by helping, albeit often unwittingly, conservative anti-Enlightenment ideologies to dominate the scene. The Enlightenment that Failed relates both the American and the French revolutions to the Enlightenment in a markedly different fashion from how this is usually done, showing how both great revolutions were fundamentally split between bitterly opposed and utterly incompatible ideological tendencies. Radical Enlightenment, which had been an effective ideological challenge to the prevailing monarchical-aristocratic status quo, was weakened, then almost entirely derailed and displaced from the Western consciousness, in the 1830s and 1840s by the rise of Marxism and other forms of socialism.

Thinking about the Enlightenment looks beyond the current parameters of studying the Enlightenment, to the issues that can be understood by reflecting on the period in a broader context. Each of the thirteen original chapters, by an international and interdisciplinary team of contributors, illustrates the problematic legacy of the Enlightenment and the continued ramifications of its thinking since the eighteenth century. Together, they consider whether modernity can see its roots in the intellectual revolution of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The collection is divided into six sections, preceded by a comprehensive introduction to the field and the most recent scholarship on the period. Across the sections, the contributors consider modern day encounters with Enlightenment thinking, including Kant's moral philosophy, the conflict between reason and faith, the significance of the Enlightenment of law and the gender inequality that persisted throughout the eighteenth century.
