"Morgan has written an important and original work that presents a well-substantiated challenge to many recent studies of 'colonial discourse'."--Nancy L. Paxton, Susan Morgan's study of materials and regions, previously neglected in contemporary postcolonial studies, begins with the transforming premise that "place matters." Concepts derived from writings about one area of the world cannot simply be transposed to another area, in some sort of global theoretical move. Moreover, place in the discourse of Victorian imperialism is a matter of gendered as well as geographic terms. Taking up works by Anna Forbes and Marianne North on the Malay Archipelago, by Margaret Brooke and Harriette McDougall on Sarawak, by Isabella Bird and Emily Innes on British Malaya, by Anna Leonowens on Siam, Morgan also makes extensive use of theorists whose work on imperialism in Southeast Asia is unfamiliar to most American academics. This vivid examination of a different region and different writings emphasizes that in Victorian literature there was no monolithic imperialist location, authorial or geographic. The very notion of a 'colony' or an 'imperial presence' in Southeast Asia is problematic. Morgan is concerned with marking the intersections of particular Victorian imperial histories and constructions of subjectivity. She argues that specific places in Southeast Asia have distinctive, and differing, masculine imperial rhetorics. It is within these specific rhetorical contexts that women's writings, including their moments of critique, can be read.

This book explores contemporary transformations of the female Bildungsroman, showing that the intersection of the genre and gender brought to critical attention in the context of second wave feminism remains of equal importance in the era of postfeminism. The female Bildung narrative has acquired an important position in twentieth - and twenty-first century literature through its continuing depiction of female self-discovery and emancipation as a process of negotiating the traditional divisions of female and male roles in relation to the private and public spaces. Recognizing the seminal contribution of feminist criticism to the definition of the genre and the role of feminist cultural processes in its thematic developments, this volume investigates more recent influences on the female Bildung narrative and the influence of the classic female Bildungsroman on contemporary cultural texts. As a collection of fifteen essays written by international scholars, the book offers a representative sample of the narratives of female development, presenting a variety of genres, including the novel, the short story, autobiography, TV series, and Internet video blogs, and theoretical frameworks, adopting hermeneutic, postcolonial, feminist, and postfeminist perspectives. In its diversity, this volume reveals that, despite the ongoing process of women's emancipation, the heroine's struggle with the private/public divide has remained, throughout the twentieth century and in the first decades of the new millennium, a central issue in stories about the female quest for self-definition. The book will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of literary, women and gender studies, particularly those interested in the narratives of female development that represent American and British cultural contexts.

Part of a series which looks at the involvement of women in various aspects of history from the late 18th century to the present day and explores a particular theme through documentary evidence, quotations and contemporary pictures, this text seeks to explore women's contributions to literature in Britain. A variety of women's writings is examined, from social commentaries, diaries and journalism to poetry and fiction. The author considers the reasons why in the past it was so difficult for women to write and have their work appreciated, and goes on to look at the work of prominent and lesser-known writers in conjunction with the social and moral climate in which they lived. The work of the early playwright Aphra Behn is considered, along with the work of the "Blue Stockings" including Elizabeth Carter, Fanny Burnley and Mary Wollstonecraft. The writers of social commentaries for the poor are investigated along with the contribution that women made to the development of the novel. Poetry, journalism and magazine writing, as well as accounts of ordinary life through diaries, show the diversity of women's skills. The experimentation by writers in the early 20th century is outlined, as is the influence of feminism on modern women writers. The book concludes with a look at the work of present day women writers, their achievements in winning literary awards, and the foundation of women-only publishers. This collection examines early modern women's contribution to the culturally central mode of complaint. Complaint has largely been understood as male-authored, yet, as this collection shows, early modern women used complaint across a surprising variety of forms from the early-Tudor period to the late-seventeenth century. They were some of the mode's first writers, most influential patrons, and most innovative contributors. Together, these new essays illuminate early modern women's participation in one of the most powerful rhetorical modes in the English Renaissance, one which gave voice to political, religious and erotic protest and loss across a diverse range of texts. This volume interrogates new texts (closet drama, song, manuscript-based religious and political lyrics), new authors (Dorothy Shirley, Scots satirical writers, Hester Pulter, Mary Rowlandson), and new versions of complaint (biblical, satirical, legal, and vernacular). Its essays pay specific attention to politics, form, and transmission from complaint's first circulation up to recent digital representations of its texts. Bringing together an international group of experts in early modern women's writing and in complaint literature more broadly, this collection explores women's role in the formation of the mode and in doing so reconfigures our understanding of complaint in Renaissance culture and thought. .
