5. The complete polysyllabic spree [2006]
- Hornby, Nick.
- London ; New York : Viking, 2006.
- Description
- Book — ix, 278 p. : ill. ; 23 cm.
- Summary
-
'So this is supposed to be about the how, and when, and why, and what of reading - about the way that, when reading is going well, one books leads to another and to another, a paper trail of theme and meaning; and how, when it's going badly, when books don't stick or take, when your mood and the mood of the book are fighting like cats, you'd rather do anything but attempt the next paragraph, or reread the last one for the tenth time'. In his monthly accounts of what he's read - along with what he may one day read - Nick Hornby ably explores everything from the classic to the graphic novel, as well as poems, plays, and sports-related exposes. And, if he occasionally implores a biographer for brevity, or abandons a literary work in favor of an Arsenal soccer match, then all is not lost. His writing, full of all the joy and surprise and despair that books bring him, reveals why we still read, even when there's soccer on TV, a pram in the hall, and a good band playing at our local bar.

- Description
- Book — 222 p. : ill. ; 22 cm.
- Summary
-
This text examines the various treatments of the myth of the rape of Lucretia in Renaissance England. The first section deals with Shakespeare's narrative poem "Lucrece", while the second analyzes representations of the story on the contemporary stage, including Heywood's play and other material. The author offers a close analysis of the texts, and also contextualizes the representations within the socio-economic circumstances of the time in which they were produced. Topics discussed in an effort to illuminate the ways in which the story reflects, and is reflected by, the early modern discourses of gender and genre include: epistemology, thanatology, ontology, medicine, witchcraft, cartography, and interior decoration.

16. Their silence a language [1993]
- Hooker, Jeremy, 1941-
- London : Enitharmon Press, 1993.
- Description
- Book — 79 p. : ill. ; 23 cm.
- Summary
-
So the old snake sheds its skins. Clash of flint with flint that waves hurl against chalk. Risings, sinkings: cycle on cycle. Fresh water, salt water, brackish lagoon. Whirl and loop of streaming gravel. Cloud on cloud of sediment. Yaldhurst: the tilled fields. This collection is the outcome of a creative collaboration between the poet Jeremy Hooker and the sculptor Lee Grandjean. The work originated from Hooker's lifelong knowledge of the New Forest in the south of England and Grandjean's powerful tree images. The book creates a strong sense of the presence of the Forest, but is concerned primarily to realize an imaginative vision that involves new relationships, especially between man and nature. It comprises photographs of sculpture, two woodcuts and unique drawings specifically designed around the text of the sequence of poems, as well as an essay by Hooker on the collaboration, and extracts from his explorations of the Forest in prose.
