This is an undergraduate textbook that reveals the intricacies of geometry. The approach used is that a geometry is a space together with a set of transformations of that space (as argued by Klein in his Erlangen programme). The authors explore various geometries: affine, projective, inversive, non-Euclidean and spherical. In each case the key results are explained carefully, and the relationships between the geometries are discussed. This richly illustrated and clearly written text includes full solutions to over 200 problems, and is suitable both for undergraduate courses on geometry and as a resource for self study.

This book analyzes how Central Asians actively engaged with the rapidly globalizing world of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In presenting the first English-language history of the Khanate of Khoqand (1709-1876), Scott C. Levi examines the rise of that extraordinarily dynamic state in the Ferghana Valley. Levi reveals the many ways in which the Khanate's integration with globalizing forces shaped political, economic, demographic, and environmental developments in the region, and he illustrates how these same forces contributed to the downfall of Khoqand. Too often relegated to the periphery of early modern Eurasian history, Levi applies a "connected history" methodology to demonstrate the major historical significance of this vibrant state and region, showing in great detail how Central Asians actively influenced policies among their larger imperial neighbors-notably Tsarist Russia and Qing China. This original study will appeal to a wide interdisciplinary audience, including scholars and students of Central Asian, Russian, Middle-Eastern, Chinese and world history, as well as the study of comparative empire and the history of globalization.

Compared with numerous critical studies in Central Asian history, politics and society published during recent years, modern languages and literary traditions of Central Asia have received less scholarly attention in the West. If we consider specifically the Iranian world, especially in the modern period, it must be admitted that the linguistics and literature of Central Asia, compared to the linguistics and literature of Iran, remain in need of more investigation. This collection sheds light on various issues of the Iranian linguistic and literary arena "outside of Iran", offering a variety of twelve original contributions by both leading scholars and new names in the international academic setting. The regions of Afghanistan, Badakhshan, and Transoxania, important centers of Iranian languages and literatures, are here brought back into their broader Iranian context, for the benefit of modern Iranian studies. Si l'on considere en particulier le monde iranien, surtout dans la periode moderne, il faut admettre que la linguistique et la litterature de l'Asie Centrale, comparees a celles de l'Iran, auraient besoin de plus de recherches. Ce recueil eclaire differents problemes du domaine linguistique et litteraire iranien "en dehors de l'Iran", offrant douze contributions originales par d'eminents chercheurs, mais aussi par des nouveaux noms dans le monde academique international. Between the ninth and the fifteenth centuries, Central Asia was a major political, economic and cultural hub on the Eurasian continent. In the first half of the thirteenth century it was also the pre-eminent centre of power in the largest land-based empire the world has ever seen. This third volume of Christoph Baumer's extensively praised and lavishly illustrated new history of the region is above all a story of invasion, when tumultuous and often brutal conquest profoundly shaped the later history of the globe. The author explores the rise of Islam and the remarkable victories of the Arab armies which - inspired by their vital, austere and egalitarian desert faith - established important new dynasties like the Seljuks, Karakhanids and Ghaznavids. A golden age of artistic, literary and scientific innovation came to a sudden end when, between 1219 and 1260, Genghiz Khan and his successors overran the Chorasmian-Abbasid lands. Dr Baumer shows that the Mongol conquests, while shattering to their enemies, nevertheless resulted in much greater mercantile and cultural contact between Central Asia and Western Europe.

Globalisation continues to challenge our world at unprecedented speed. Technological innovations, changing geographical developments, regional rivalries, and destruction of national critical infrastructures in several Muslim states due to the US so-called war on terrorism-all transformed the structures and hierarchies of societies. The idea of the development of a nation that sounds on tripods that are food, shelter, and security failed. The Edward Snowden leaks challenged policymakers and the public understanding and perspectives on the role of security intelligence in liberal democratic states. The persisting imbalance of power in the United States, its institutional turmoil, and intelligence war, and the noticeably tilting power have made the country feel vulnerable and prodded it into military ventures. The calibration of Western allies around Whitehouse as the sole center of globalization has only brought instability, destruction, and loss of human lives.
