Life behind the Iron Curtain. Art and artifacts from East Germany. The history book to make history. "9 mai 1945 : la capitulation sans condition de l'Allemagne est signée. Le pays et Berlin sont divisés en quatre zones d'occupation par les puissances alliées : à l'Est les Soviétiques, à l'Ouest les Américains, les Britanniques et les Français. La reconstruction matérielle, mais aussi idéologique et artistique du pays est immédiatement entreprise. La cassure fondamentale qui suit la découverte et la libération des camps mène à une nécessité radicale : éliminer toutes les racines idéologiques du nazisme par un processus de "dénazification" du peuple allemand, avant une phase de "rééducation". Les arts sont mis à contribution à toutes les étapes de ces processus : musique, arts graphiques, théâtre, cinéma ou encore littérature doivent exalter les nouvelles valeurs communes de démocratie et de liberté portées par les Alliés. Dans un premier temps, les esthétiques et les expériences modernes bannies et considérées comme "dégénérées" sous le III' Reich sont remises à l'honneur. Mais rapidement, il apparaît que les termes "démocratie" et "liberté" revêtent des significations très différentes de la zone Ouest à la zone Est-allemande. En filigrane à l'entreprise de "démocratisation" voulue par tous se dessine déjà un conflit idéologique qui prendra progressivement une ampleur mondiale : la Guerre froide. Au fil des mois et des événements, la "rééducation" du peuple allemand se mue progressivement en une "réorientation" idéologique. Les arts se doublent alors d'un rôle stratégique : faire de la propagande politique en faveur de l'occupant, de diverses manières. Tandis qu'à l'Est l'esthétique du réalisme socialiste prévaut, la politique artistique anticommuniste remplace officiellement l'antinazisme dans les trois zones de l'Ouest. Conséquence directe de cette stratégie : la modernité artistique, largement subventionnée, y devient garante du caractère "démocratique" de l'art. À travers le regard de musicologues, musiciens, historiens de l'art, de la littérature, du cinéma ou du théâtre, cet ouvrage propose un éclairage inédit de la renaissance artistique dans l'Allemagne occupée entre 1945 et 1949 et met ainsi en lumière des enjeux politiques et idéologiques trop souvent méconnus."--P. The sudden fall of the Berlin Wall is one of the defining images of the late twentieth century. The subsequent unification of Germany and the decision to return Berlin to its status as capital has made the constant changes within the city a matter of public interest. It also offered Berlin the opportunity to create a new image for itself, one that can serve as a counterbalance to the politically charged recent history of Berlin as the capital of Nazi Germany and former East Berlin as the capital of the German Democratic Republic. It explores the diversity of art produced in the state and contests the long-held perception that socialist realism and artistic innovation were mutually exclusive. Crucially, the collection puts art itself to the fore; GDR art is considered not simply as a political by-product, as is so often the case, but as an entity of innovation and aesthetic value in its own right.

Welchen Stellenwert hatte Kreativität in einer Diktatur wie der DDR? Ausgehend von der Arbeit von Tänzern, Musikern und Künstlern verschiedener Sparten beschäftigt sich dieses Buch mit dem Diskurs des Schöpferischen in der DDR und seiner Verbindung mit der Etablierung eines seit den 1960er Jahren aktuell gewordenen performativen Kunstkanons. Fine Kwiatkowski, A.R. Penck, Lutz Dammbeck, Gret Palucca u.a.: Ihre Improvisationen und performativen Kunstinterventionen fanden zum Teil durchaus in institutionalisiertem Rahmen statt, wurden aber auch als Kritik am vorherrschenden System verstanden. Ob ihre Kunst als politische Kommunikation verstanden wurde, war kontextabhängig. Deshalb blickt diese Arbeit mit einem transnationalen Blick auch auf scheinbar kunstfremde Wissensfelder wie die Sozialwissenschaften und die Kybernetik. Dort etablierte sich jene Sprache, welche als Legitimationsmittel neuer und alten künstlerischer Praktiken zum Einsatz kam. Das überraschende Ergebnis ist: Das für den Kapitalismus heute als hegemonial geltende Leitbild des Kreativsubjekts hatte in der DDR sein sozialistisches Pendant.
