- An, Kyung, author.
- London : Thames & Hudson, 2017.
- Description
- Book — 136 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 21 cm
- Summary
-
What is contemporary art? What makes it 'contemporary'? What is it for? And why is it so expensive? The contemporary art world can be a baffling place, but Kyung An and Jessica Cerasi are on hand to bring you up to speed. From museums and the art market to biennales and the next big thing, Who's Afraid of Contemporary Art? offers concise and pointed insights into today's art scene, examining how artists are propelled to stardom, explaining what curators do, challenging our understanding of artistic skill, demystifying the art market, and much, much more. In this easy-to-navigate A to Z guide, the authors' playful explanations draw on key artworks, artists and events from around the globe, including how the lights going on and off won the Turner Prize, what makes the likes of Marina Abramoviae and Ai Weiwei such great artists, and why Kanye West would trade his Grammys to be one. Packed with behind-the-scenes information and completely free of jargon, Who's Afraid of Contemporary Art? is the perfect gallery companion and the go-to guide for when the next big thing leaves you stumped.

- Hicks, Alistair.
- London : Thames & Hudson Ltd., 2014.
- Description
- Book — 224 pages : ill. ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
In his highly original, wide-ranging and abundantly illustrated book, Alistair Hicks demonstrates his belief that no single curator, critic or dealer can or should monopolize our view of what is happening in the art world today. Instead, he aims to show us how exciting and rewarding it is to steer our own way through the art world. See the art, listen to the artist, trust your responses learn to navigate according to your own instincts. The Global Art Compass is an account of the authors explorations in the contemporary art world and a manifesto for how we might all discover our own inner art compass. The book has an easy-to-navigate continent-by-continent structure and includes numerous extracts from the authors interviews with artists as diverse as Laure Prouvost (France), Gavin Turk (UK), Anri Sala (Albania), Roman Ondak (Slovakia), Michael Borremans (Belgium), Lada Nakonechna (Russia), Gabriel Orozco (Mexico), Amy Cutler (USA), Sandra Gamarra (Peru), Cai Guo-Qiang (China), Nandan Ghiya (India) among many others.

- Rosoff, Patricia, 1949-
- First edition. - North Adams, Massachusetts : Tupelo Press, 2013.
- Description
- Book — 187 pages, 12 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations (some color) ; 23 cm.
- Summary
-
"Literary Nonfiction. Art. Award-winning journalist, artist, and educator Patricia Rosoff offers a first-hand tour of the sometimes shocking, often challenging ideas and approaches that continue to fuel the art of today. Rosoff describes the sources of contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media in the works of such radicals as Monet, Kandinsky, and Joseph Cornell, who are now part of the tradition but who keep on catalyzing experimental innovators such as Ellen Carey, Spencer Finch, Janine Antoni, and Iñigo Manglano-Ovale. With close (and sympathetic) consideration of conceptualists, including works by Sol LeWitt and Mierle Ukeles, and with special excitement about the inexhaustible potential in abstract art, Pat Rosoff is the gallery or museum guide you've always wished to have along"-- Provided by publisher.

13. Searching for art's new publics [2010]
- Bristol ; Chicago : Intellect, 2010.
- Description
- Book — 224 p. : ill. (chiefly col.) ; 23 cm.
- Summary
-
Drawing on contributions from practicing artists, writers, curators and academics, "Searching for Art's New Publics" explores the ways in which artists seek to involve, create and engage with new and diverse audiences: from passers-by encountering and participating in the work unexpectedly, to professionals from other disciplines and members of particular communities. Bridging the gap between practice and theory, this exciting book touches on issues of relational aesthetics, but also offers an illustrated artist-based approach. "Searching for Art's New Publics" will appeal to students studying fine art (especially those with an interest in cross-disciplinary work and public art), and those studying curating.

20. Heather Phillipson [2020]
- Phillipson, Heather, artist, editor.
- Munich ; London ; New York : Prestel, 2020
- Description
- Book — 240 pages : color illustrations ; 29 cm
- Summary
-
Contemporary British artist Heather Phillipson works across video, sculpture, online projects, music, drawing, and poetry. She has been selected as the next artist for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square and for the 2020 Duveen Galleries commission at Tate Britain. Other recent commissions include Sharjah Biennial 14 and the Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin, and her solo projects range from Art on the Underground's flagship site at Gloucester Road, an online work for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and a major solo show at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. This first monograph on the artist traces the evolution of her practice. Alongside the artist's own writings, the book will feature three newly-commissioned essays by writer and curator Laura McLean-Ferris, the experimental London-based writer Charlie Fox, and Professor Chus Martinez. The book explores the wide variety of media used by the artist to investigate the power structures and contradictions of contemporary life.
