Jaap Mansfeld and Frans de Haas bring together in this volume a distinguished international team of ancient philosophers, presenting a systematic, chapter-by-chapter study of one of the key texts in Aristotle's science and metaphysics: the first book of On Generation and Corruption. In GC I Aristotle provides a general outline of physical processes such as generation and corruption, alteration, and growth, and inquires into their differences. He also discusses physical notions such as contact, action and passion, and mixture. These notions are fundamental to Aristotle's physics and cosmology, and more specifically to his theory of the four elements and their transformations. Moreover, references to GC elsewhere in the Aristotelian corpus show that in GC I Aristotle is doing heavy conceptual groundwork for more refined applications of these notions in, for example, the psychology of perception and thought, and the study of animal generation and corruption. Ultimately, biology is the goal of the series of enquiries in which GC I demands a position of its own immediately after the Physics. The contributors deal with questions of structure and text constitution and provide thought-provoking discussions of each chapter of GC I. New approaches to the issues of how to understand first matter, and how to evaluate Aristotle's notion of mixture are given ample space. Throughout, Aristotle's views of the theories of the Presocratics and Plato are shown to be crucial in understanding his argument.

This book consolidates emerging research on Aristotle's science and ethics in order to explore the extent to which the concepts, methods, and practices he developed for scientific inquiry and explanation are used to investigate moral phenomena. Each chapter shows, in a different way, that Aristotle's ethics is much more like a science than it is typically represented. The upshot of this is twofold. First, uncovering the links between Aristotle's science and ethics promises to open up new and innovative directions for research into his moral philosophy. Second, showing why Aristotle thinks ethics can never be fully assimilated to the model of science will help shed new light on his views about the limits of science. The volume thus promises to make a significant contribution to our understanding of the epistemological, metaphysical, and psychological foundations of Aristotle's ethics.

The period from Plato's birth to Aristotle's death (427-322 BC) is one of the most influential and formative in the history of Western philosophy. A much-maligned feature of ancient and medieval political thought is its tendency to appeal to nature to establish norms for human communities. From Aristotle's claim that humans are "political animals" to Aquinas' invocation of "natural law, " it may seem that pre-modern philosophers were all too ready to assume that whatever is natural is good, and that just political arrangements must somehow be natural. The papers in this collection show that this assumption is, at best, too crude. From very early, for instance in the ancient sophists' contrast between nomos and physis, there was recognition that political arrangements may be precisely artificial, not natural, and it may be questioned whether even such supposed naturalists as Aristotle in fact adopt the quick inference from "natural" to "good." The papers in this volume trace the complex interrelations between nature and such concepts as law, legitimacy, and justice, covering a wide historical range stretching from Plato and the Sophists to Aristotle, Hellenistic philosophy, Cicero, the Neoplatonists Plotinus and Porphyry, ancient Christian thinkers, and philosophers of both the Islamic and Christian Middle Ages.

The series Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca et Byzantina (CAGB) presents editions of commentaries and other Greek texts on the transmission and the reception of Aristotle in the ancient world and medieval Byzantium until the Renaissance. This fundamental work is intended to promote the study of the heritage and the subsequent development of peripatetic philosophy, and thus to provide a significant contribution to contemporary scholarship on Byzantine philosophy. The thematic and scholarly content of the new series complements and follows the tradition of the Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca (1882-1909), founded by Hermann Diels. The programme is planned to include texts by Alexander of Aphrodisias, Simplikios, Johannes Philoponos, Michael of Ephesus, Nikephoros Blemmydes, Theodoros Metochites, Georgios Scholarios and Bessarion. The volumes consist of a praefatio on the textual tradition, the text with apparatus criticus, and normally a translation in a modern language. Other sections and aids are included depending on the nature of the texts (commentary, paraphrase, compilation, scholia, etc.) and how well they have survived. The edition of these works, which were often written as working texts, is intended to reflect the historical state of the language according to modern philological standards. Besides a complete catalogue of manuscripts and a prosopographical compendium on the reception of Aristotle in Byzantium, the volumes of the CABC are also intended to facilitate exegetic access, in particular to important new discoveries and fragments of lost ancient texts.
