3. PWA : looking AIDS in the face [1996]
- Moore, Oscar, 1960-
- [London] : Picador, [1996].
- Description
- Book — xxxvi, 185 p. ; 20 cm.
- Summary
-
Oscar Moore's "PWA" ("Person With Aids") column in the "Guardian" gave us moving and informative insights into what it's like to live with the physical deterioration that Aids inevitably brings. Humane and witty and written with a tough-minded, dry humour, "PWA" proved to be a comfort to people, whether touched by illness or not. As Moore's postbag shows ...'You have talked about Aids without self-pity while continually reminding me of the important things in life that also make mine worth living' - V, Bristol. 'Thanks again for the humour you bring into our lives through your own frustrations and fears; maybe you can help us learn to appreciate and enjoy each moment of our lives, without the necessity to experience crisis' - T, Eastbourne. 'I have nothing in common with Oscar Moore. I'm writing to say 'Don't give in'. He won't, of course. He doesn't know how to' - E, Milton Keynes. 'Your fears, your vivid writing, your courage have given me great hope in the face of the ghastly, and seemingly unfair, experiences and symptoms we share. I hope that many, like me, have been fortified and humbled by your joie de vivre and courage' - H, Exmouth.

- Summary
-
When an artist dies we face two great losses: the person and the work he did not live to do. Loss within Loss is a moving collaboration by some of America's most eloquent writers, who supply wry, raging, sorrowful, and buoyant accounts of artist friends and lovers struck down by AIDS. These essayists include Maya Angelou, Allan Gurganus, Brad Gooch, John Berendt, Craig Lucas, Robert Rosenblum, and seventeen others. Many of the subjects of the essays were already prominent - James Merrill, Paul Monette, David Wojnarowicz - but many others died young, before they were able to fulfill the promise of their lives and art. Loss within Loss spans all of the arts and includes portraits of choreographers, painters, poets, actors, playwrights, sculptors, editors, composers, and architects. This landmark book is published in association with the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS, a national organization that preserves art works created by artists living with HIV or lost to AIDS. Loss within Loss stands as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic on the arts community and as the first real survey of that devastation. Though these accounts are often intensely sad, Loss within Loss is an invigorating, sometimes even exuberant, testimony to the sheer joy of being an artist...and being alive.

- Ibáñez-Carrasco, J. Francisco (Jose Francisco), 1963- author.
- Oakland, CA : Transgress Press, 2014.
- Description
- Book — xxii, 173 pages ; 23 cm
- Summary
-
30 years ago, the world was a very different place. That's when Francisco Ibáñez-Carrasco, a native of Santiago, Chile, moved to Vancouver, discovered he was HIV-positive and was faced with the question of how to seize his life. In 1985 terms, he had an unsurvivable illness. In his own terms, he had new license to face his mortality with grit and dark humor. A no-holds-barred account of the irreverent, dirty, and illuminating escapades in Carrasco's three decades of living, working in HIV clinics, and being involved in the BDSM and fetish community. Giving It Raw, is the first memoir from the celebrated novelist and beloved enfant terrible of Canadian literature.

- Gooch, Brad, 1952- author.
- First edition. - New York : Harper, An Imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers, [2015]
- Description
- Book — 233 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm
- Summary
-
The author of the acclaimed City Poet returns with a searing memoir of life in 1980s New York City-a colorful and atmospheric tale of wild bohemians, glamorous celebrity, and complicated passions-with cameo appearances by Madonna, Robert Mapplethorpe, William Burroughs, and a host of others legendary artists. Brad Gooch arrived in New York in the late 1970s, yearning for artistic and personal freedom. Smash Cut is his bold and intimate memoir of this exhilarating time and place. At its center is his love affair with film director Howard Brookner, pieced together from fragments of memory and fueled by a panoply of emotions, from blazing ecstasy to bleakest despair. As both men try to reconcile love and fidelity with the irresistible desire to enjoy the freedom of the age, they live together and apart. Gooch works briefly as a model in Milan, then returns to the city and discovers his vocation as an artist. Brookner falls ill with a mysterious virus that soon has a terrifying name: AIDS. And the story, and life in the city, is suddenly overshadowed by this new demon plague that will ravage a generation and transform the creative world. Gooch charts the progress of Brookner through his illness, and writes unforgettably about endings: of a great talent, a passionate love affair, and an incandescent era. Beautifully written, full of rich detail and poignant reflection, recalling a time and a place and group of friends with affection and clarity, Smash Cut is an extraordinary memoir and an exquisite account of an epoch. Illustrated with 30 black-and-white photographs.
