Puccini's achingly beautiful score charmingly conveys the plight of Magda (the "swallow" of the title) who unexpectedly finds true love with the handsome young Ruggero. But their idyllic and happy life comes to an premature end as she is haunted by the fear that her checkered past will ruin his future. Real-life couple and operatic stars Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna portray Puccini's star-crossed lovers. Ezio Frigerio's elegant and sophisticated art deco sets add a dazzling touch to Nicholas Joël's production, which premiered in 2008

Ralph Vaughan Williams composed hundreds of song cycles set to poems by Stevenson, Shakespeare, Chaucer, Rossetti, Whitman, Bunyan, Blake, Housman, and other celebrated writers. Composed between 1901 and 1904, his Songs of Travel and Other Verses are inspired by Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson’s eponymous collection, which tells the tale of a wandering poet who travels around the world in search of a light to give new life to his broken heart, and the work is a sort of musical-spiritual sister to Schubert’s Die Winterreise. The concert’s second half is devoted to Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (“The Shepherd on the Rock”), a beloved Lied of the German Romantic tradition for soprano, clarinet, and piano that sets two poems by Wilhelm Müller and another poem by Karl August Varnhagen von Ense. The 1828 work would be his second-to-last, published a year after his premature death at the age of 31. In this concert, the two masterpieces receive an enchanting and compelling performance by the musicians of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center

From Turkish gardens to Peruvian deserts, from Arabian palaces to the forests of North America, Rameau's Les Indes galantes explores the themes of love, jealousy, and redemption through the peoples of far-flung lands. In a recent production of the opéra-ballet as part of Munich's 2016 Opera Festival, stage director and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui turns the composer's original fascination with exotic cultures on its head, stripping the tales of their foreign trappings and in doing so transforming them into reflections on traditions, assumptions, and superstitions closer to home. Music Director and early music specialist Ivor Bolton leads the Münchner Festspielorchester in Rameau's luscious score, while the talented vocal soloists are joined by the choir and dancers of Cherkaoui's Antwerp-based Compagnie Eastman.
