The National Gallery's collection of European paintings from the 13th to the early-20th century is one of the richest and most comprehensive in the world. The complete illustrated catalogue provides concise and up-to-date information on every work owned by the National Gallery and on permanent or long-term loan. There are over 2000 entries, each of which includes the title of the picture, its date, attribution, accession number and available information on support, medium and dimensions. The text describes the subject matter of every work, its origin, function and provenance. All the works are illustrated, the majority in colour; reconstructions of altarpieces and paintings too large to be represented clearly in the body of the Catalogue are reproduced in greater detail at the back. Inscriptions are transcribed and translated. Each artist is given a brief biography and a bibliography at the end of the Catalogue lists major sources for further reading. A comprehensive index provides easy access to the information found in the Catalogue and enables readers to refer quickly to particular artists and paintings.

The complete illustrated catalogue is available in two versions, as a printed book and as a package of CD-ROM and book combined. The CD-ROM contains the complete text of the catalogue with high resolution illustrations of every work owned by the National Gallery and on permanent or long-term loan. The indexes and search facilities on disc provide art historians, picture researchers and the interested general public with in-depth access to one of the world's most important collections of European painting from the 13th to the 20th century. In addition to the descriptions of works and biographies of artists, each work has an associated set of key words relating to general subjects (eg children, angels, winter), specific subjects (eg Samson, Mary Magdalen), and picture types (eg portrait, landscape, still life, altarpiece). The artist index includes aliases and alternative alphabetizations (eg Van Gogh under v and g). The material is organized alphabetically by artist as in the book. In addition to a comprehensive bibliography of major studies of the collection, a bibliography (as a pop-up) is available for each painting. The illustrations are available in two sizes: a "thumbnail" - approximately the same size on screen as on the pages of the book - and a much larger blow-up for closer study. The blow-up images have a maximum dimension of 1500 x 1500 pixels - equivalent to a screen area of 20" by 20", enabling users to study every work in the Gallery's collection in greater detail than in other printed or electronic versions. As in the book, all but 300 of a total of more than 2200 illustrations are in colour. Users have facilities for downloading and printing small-scale images and text for personal use (with copyright notices).

The National Gallery, London possesses an important collection of paintings by 16th-century Netherlandish artists, including Joachim Beuckelaer, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jean Gossart, and Quinten Massys. The National Gallery in London houses one of the most important collections of early Italian paintings outside Italy, including works by Cimabue, Duccio, Giotto and the di Cione brothers. This completely updated catalogue of the collection is the first published since 1989, and it now includes four exceptional acquisitions from the intervening years: the 13th-century diptych now attributed to the Master of the Borgo Crucifix, The Virgin and Child by Cimabue, The Virgin and Child by the Clarisse Master, and The Coronation of the Virgin by Bernardo Daddi. For this volume, Dillian Gordon takes into account the substantial body of new research published over the past twenty years to review and in some cases reattribute the works. All but two paintings have been re-examined by the National Gallery's team of curators, conservators, and scientists. Through the use of infrared reflectography, much new information has been revealed regarding the significance of underdrawings and technique.
