Set in the early 1950's, during the time of Stalin's Personality Cult. The story opens in a provincial town. Tomek's father, a former member of the Home Army is arrested, leaving his mother with the task of raising two children by herself. The neighbor upstairs commits suicide when her husband is also arrested and transported to the prison camp. The teachers at school are ideologues who teach the students propaganda. One day, they ask the students who among them goes to church on Sundays; the whole class stands up to defeat the purpose of the propaganda lesson. Tomek is sent to the training school in the summer. There he absorbs most of the ideology pumped into his head, and when his father is released from prison he finds a different boy than the one left.

Originally made for Polish television, Dekalog focuses on the residents of a housing complex in post-Communist Poland, whose lives become subtly intertwined as they face emotional dilemmas that are at once deeply personal and universally human. Using the Ten Commandments for thematic inspiration and an overarching structure, the ten hour-long films deftly grapple with complex moral and existential questions concerning life, death, love, hate, truth, and the passage of time. Also presented are the longer theatrical versions of the series' fifth and sixth films: A Short Film About Killing and A Short Film About Love.
