It is also the story of the Mexican criminal underworld at that time, its codes of ethics and behavior, the diverse "categories" of the offenders who settled the city's streets, the alliences of police authorities that allowed them to go on with their illegal activities, the treasons that came as a consequence of such alliances and the price that they wound up paying for it.

On February 14th, 1974, 19-year-old Dení Prieto Stock was killed by the Mexican army in the town of Nepantla, along with four of her comrades in the Fuerzas de Liberación Nacional (National Liberation Forces), a forerunner to the Zapatistas. FLOWER IN OTOMI depicts Prieto Stock's short, but very full life and the trajectory that brought her to Nepantla and the FLN. Her sister and other family members recount a cozy childhood spent between New York and Mexico City with parents who raised them to support leftist causes. A cousin shares letters that detail her radicalization, and former lovers describe her growing conviction, particularly following the killing of student protestors in the Tlatelolco massacre, that armed revolution was the only path to economic and social justice in Mexico.

The 21st-century age of migration comes into deeper focus in this poetic look at the border between Mexico and its Central American neighbors, the first obstacle between hopeful migrants and their dreams for a better life. For thousands of immigrating Guatemalans, Hondurans, Salvadorans, and others, southern Mexican border towns like Tapachula, Chiapas, are where the dangers of their journey begin: If the police don't get you, the thieves will (and if the thieves don't rob you, the police will).

El Niño Fidencio (José Fidencio de Jésus Sintora Constantino) dedicated a great part of his life to the sick people who for years and by the thousands came to him seeking relief. HIs activity as a healer in the small town of Espinazo, Nuevo Léon, lasting from 1921 until his death in 1938, was intense. His healing methods were varied, rustic and not at all orthodox. Fidencio was believed to possess paranormal therapeutic powers, the gift of telepathy, and clairvoyant skills. This documentary was filmed in Espinazo in October 1980 and March 1981, on the dates that commemorate his death and the feast of his patron saint. Year after year there come to this place many Fidencistas from Mexico and the United States who take part in the collective spiritualistic phenomenon documented in this film--Adapted from the opening English subtitles.
