This fully-illustrated catalogue publishes 2021 pre-imperial ancient Greek coins from an area of Asia Minor covering Caria to Commagene but excluding Cyprus. Each coin is carefully photographed and its description appears opposite for ease of reference. Technical details are supplied for each coin, with comparanda and provenances in nearly every case. This welcome addition to the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum series continues the cataloguing of the Ashmolean Museum's rich holdings. It will be of interest to numismatists, coin collectors, and scholars and students of the archaeology and history of the Greek world.

This book records, illustrates, and discusses the context of more than 1,000 coins from the Anglo-Saxon period, assembled by the author during 60 years of scholarly research and deposited by him in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, on lifetime loan. The composition of the collection reflects this research and is therefore particularly strong in the so-called sceattas and stycas of the kingdom of Northumbria, and also in silver pennies of Edward the Elder from the early 10th century, as well as the issues of Aethelred II and Cnut which immediately preceded and followed the former's death in 1016. A textual chapter discusses and points to a resolution of the discrepancy in 9th-century Northumbrian chronology as presented by Norman historians and from analysis of the coinage. A later chapter reviews the evidence of documents, hoards and the analytical study of the surviving coinage for the dates and durations of its periodic renewal in the fifty years after its reform by Edgar c.973.

Since independence in 1948, Burma has suffered from many internal conflicts. One of the longest of these has been in the Kachin State, in the far north of the country where Burma has borders with India to the west and China to the east. In Being and Becoming Kachin Mandy Sadan explores the origins of the armed movement that started in 1961 and considers why it has continued for so long. Being and Becoming Kachin places the problems that have led to hostilities between the political heartland of Burma and one of its most important peripheries in a longer perspective than is usually the case. It explains how the experience of globalisation and the geopolitics of competing imperial systems from the late eighteenth century onwards produced and then entrenched the politics of exclusion and resistance. However, it also uses detailed ethnographic research to explore the social and cultural dynamics of Kachin ethno-nationalism as it emerged during this period, providing a rich analysis that goes beyond the purely political. The research draws upon an extensive range of sources, including archival materials in Jinghpaw and an extensive study of ritual and ritual language. Making a wide variety of cross-disciplinary observations, it explains in depth and breadth how a region such as the Kachin State came into being. When combined with detailed local insights into how these experiences contributed to the historical development of modern Kachin ethno-nationalism, Being and Becoming Kachin encourages new ways of thinking about the Kachin region and its history of armed resistance, which has implications for how we understand many similar, troubled borderworlds in Burma and beyond.

This is the first full study of the important medieval stained glass of Merton College, Oxford. The scheme in the chapel is exceptionally well preserved; with the nave of York Minster, it represents the largest surviving set of early fourteenth-century windows in Britain. Research for this volume in the rich college archives has provided a new date for them, and identified the glazier, whose business is considered locally. Outstanding early fifteenth-century panels from the transepts are attributed to the workshop of Thomas Glazier, who had worked for William of Wykeham, Chancellor of England. Seven windows in the Old Library contain the earliest glazing to survive from any English library. The glass will therefore be of interest to many students of English medieval art and architecture. A general introduction also explores the potential of the monument for study within a university context. Merton was a model for the self-governing graduate college of the later middle ages in England. The glass invites consideration of the relationship between art and ideas, in a lost astrological window, for example; and the self-presentation of the scholar and college communities, both to themselves and to the society that supported them. As a result of the central place of the universities in national life, the Merton glass was an inspiration during the Gothic revival to artists and glazing businesses such as the Pre-Raphaelite John Everett Millais, and Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. The medieval glass is catalogued, fully illustrated and supported with restoration diagrams. There are forty colour plates. The post-medieval glass is also catalogued.

This volume (the first of two) publishes all Anglo-Saxon and British coins in Norwegian museum collections from the Iron Age up to 1016 (the death of Aethelred II 'the Unready'). Together, the two volumes contain images and descriptions of over 4,000 coins, making this important material available for analysis by archaeologists, historians and numismatists of the Viking Age and Anglo-Saxon England for the first time. Finds of English coins constitute some of the most important Norwegian evidence for Viking activity, and for economic life in Norway before the first royal coinage was issued by King Harald Hardrada in the mid-eleventh century. Anglo-Saxon coins made their way to Norway in such numbers through Viking raiding activity, trade and payments of tribute; consequently these collections provide a broad perspective of late Anglo-Saxon coinage as well as an outstanding series of rarities. These include historically significant early Viking-Age finds, the B. F. Brekke collection of Anglo-Scandinavian coins, an Agnus Dei penny of Aethelred II and the unique 'Pointed Helmet' penny of Aethelred II. The volume also includes a comprehensive and up-to-date list of hoards and coin finds, and the first detailed English-language account of the history of the Norwegian numismatic collections. It follows the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles series format in illustrating all the coins, allowing detailed study of eight museum collections.

It thus completes the two-part catalogue of over 4,200 coins (those of the Anglo-Saxon period to 1016 were published in volume 65 of the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles) in eight museum collections.This important material is made available for analysis by archaeologists, historians and numismatists of the Viking Age and Anglo-Saxon England for the first time. Finds of English coins constitute some of the most important Norwegian evidence for Viking activity, and for economic life in Norway before the first royal coinage was issued by King Harald Hardrada in the mid-eleventh century.
