The city of Fez has always been a crossroad of cultures, civilizations, and values of dialogue, peace and harmony. It is the oldest of Morocco's imperial cities and a religious, intellectual and artistic center of great historic importance. The establishment of Fez by Idriss II in the 9th century was the beginning of Arabo-Islamic civilization in Morocco. Fez went on to become not only the first capital of Morocco but also the third oldest capital in North Africa. It has lways played outstanding roles in Moroccan history not only as a former political capital, but as a convergence of international cultures as well. An architectural treasure, Fez is known for the most remarkable Medina in Morocco, an intact medieval city of souks and labyrinthine alleys. UNESCO has designated the entirety of the Fez Medina a World Monument.
