An oral history interview with an Afghan artist, Ghulam Murtaza Pardais, who came as a refugee to the U.S. in 2000 with his wife and 8 children. The interview was conducted by C. Ryan Perkins in Rochester, NY in 2022.

This oral history project traces the changes of San Francisco’s live-work lofts from their beginnings in the 1970s, through the passage of the 1980s ordinance that legalized them, and finally through the 2001 provision that halted further development of these spaces. It seeks to add to our understanding of the city’s counterculture and its history of intentional communities, as well as of the forces that drive property development and gentrification in the city. In a broad sense, the project seeks to understand how neighborhoods and cities have been shaped by artists, and how artists’ roles in their communities have changed over time. Michael Kahan, Co-Director of the Program on Urban Studies, served as the project coordinator. The project’s steering committee includes: Robin Balliger, Chris Carlsson, Abby Chen, Janet Delaney, LisaRuth Elliott, Jackie Francis, David Prowler, Meg Shiffler, Aaron Shkuda, Debra Walker. "Histories of African Americans in Silicon Valley" is an initiative of the Silicon Valley Archive, in partnership with filmmaker Kathy Cotton and Stanford Libraries Subject Specialist Alesia Montgomery. The initiative collects documentation about African Americans in the Valley and conducts oral histories with members of the community.

Includes photographs of the Black Lives Matter memorial installation on the Oval by the entrance to Stanford University, created July 10, 2020 by the student-led group Abolish Stanford. These photos were taken on July 12, two days after the installation was created, and on July 22, after flowers had been added to each memorial photograph.

At approximately 1 km resolution (30" X 30"), LandScan is the finest resolution global population distribution data available and represents an ambient population (average over 24 hours). The LandScan algorithm uses spatial data and imagery analysis technologies and a multi-variable dasymetric modeling approach to disaggregate census counts within an administrative boundary. Since no single population distribution model can account for the differences in spatial data availability, quality, scale, and accuracy as well as the differences in cultural settlement practices, LandScan population distribution models are tailored to match the data conditions and geographical nature of each individual country and region.
