In May 1900, renowned General Post Office (GPO) engineer Arthur West Heaviside gave the Inaugural Address of the Institution of Electrical Engineers Newcastle local section. With a career spanning the pre-Telegraph Act private telegraph networks as well as the subsequent GPO management and licensing of British inland telecommunications, Arthur Heaviside outlined his innovative and experimental work with all three forms of telecommunication in his various GPO engineering roles based in Newcastle. Omitted from the address was the contribution made by Arthur's younger brother, Oliver Heaviside. Throughout Arthur's career at the GPO, the two brothers exchanged frequent correspondence--some of which has survived in the IET Archives--and Arthur regularly consulted his brother about his experimental work and published papers, incorporating his brother's ideas, suggestions and corrections. The two brothers informally collaborated and published separately upon two key areas of experimentation: duplex telegraphy and the 'bridge system' of telephony. The separate publication of the brothers' work in telecommunications was notable: senior and influential GPO electrical engineerWilliam Preece strongly resisted the theoretical work of Oliver Heaviside and other so-calledMaxwellians. It was not until the 'Kennelly-Heaviside layer', independently proposed by Oliver Heaviside and American electrical engineer Arthur Kennelly in 1902, was experimentally demonstrated in the 1920s that the GPO began to formally engage with the work of Oliver Heaviside. This paper will explore the difficult and complex relationship between Preece and the two Heaviside brothers and how these personal relationships reflect the wider reception of Maxwellian ideas and theorists in British electrical engineering as well as the engineering practice of the GPO, a state institution that could be both innovative and resistant to change in equal measure. This article explores the relationship between technology and occupational identity based on working-life biographical interviews with older telecommunications engineers. In the construction of their own working-life biographical narratives, participants attached great importance to the technology with which they worked. The article contends that workers’ relationship with technology can be more nuanced than either the sociology of technology literature or the sociology of work literature accommodates. Adopting the concept of affordances, it is argued that the physical nature of earlier electromechanical technology afforded engineers the opportunity to ‘fix’ things through the skilled application of tools and act as autonomous custodians of ‘living’ machines: factors that were inherent to their occupational identity. However, the change to digital technology denied the affordances to apply hands-on skill and undermined key elements of the engineering occupational identity. Rather than simply reflecting the nostalgic romanticizing of the past, the biographies captured deterioration in the material realities of work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The generalized memory polynomial (GMP) model is one of the most commonly used models in digital predistortion to compensate for the nonlinearities and memory effects of power amplifiers (PAs). A very difficult, yet crucial, aspect of behavioral modeling is model dimensioning, i.e., determining nonlinear orders and memory depths. In this paper, we propose an algorithm based on hill-climbing (HC) heuristic to search for a GMP model structure, which provides the best tradeoff between modeling accuracy and complexity with different search criteria. Algorithm performance and convergence are evaluated for two different search criteria. Some optimization methods of the algorithms are then proposed to reduce the execution time by controlling its search path. The algorithm has been evaluated using real measurements from two different Doherty PAs. The solutions of the algorithm are proved robust in linearization of PA on the test bench. The results show that the proposed algorithm allows us to decrease the searching time by a factor typically greater than $10^4$ compared with exhaustive search. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wireless communications engineers may face complex ethical dilemmas while designing products for consumers. At Florida International University's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, we place great importance on training our students to address such ethical dilemmas, in alignment with ABET requirements. To this end, an ethical training framework is integrated into our two-semester senior design project course. In addition to the codes of ethics, our students use "The Theory Model" to make decisions based on ethical theories. For the solution of ethical dilemmas by means of ethical theories, they apply a modified version of the line drawing method. In this article we briefly explain the theories and methods that our students consider when facing ethical dilemmas. Then we present excerpts from four past senior design projects related to wireless communications. We also summarize the methodology the students use for identifying the best option to address ethical dilemmas. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
