In this paper, a novel 1-norm extreme learning machine (ELM) for regression and multiclass classification is proposed as a linear programming problem whose solution is obtained by solving its dual exterior penalty problem as an unconstrained minimization problem using a fast Newton method. The algorithm converges from any starting point and can be easily implemented in MATLAB. The main advantage of the proposed approach is that it leads to a sparse model representation meaning that many components of the optimal solution vector will become zero and therefore the decision function can be determined using much less number of hidden nodes in comparison to ELM. Numerical experiments were performed on a number of interesting real-world benchmark datasets and their results are compared with ELM using additive and radial basis function (RBF) hidden nodes, optimally pruned ELM (OP-ELM) and support vector machine (SVM) methods. Similar or better generalization performance of the proposed method on the test data over ELM, OP-ELM and SVM clearly illustrates its applicability and usefulness.

Mixed rare-earth (La, Pr)0.8Sr0.2FeO3δ-Sm0.2Ce0.8O2-δ (LPSF-SDC) composite cathode was investigated for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells based on protonic BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ (BZCY) electrolyte. The powders of La0.8xPrxSr0.2FeO3-δ (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6), Sm0.2Ce0.8O2-δ (SDC) and BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ (BZCY) were synthesized by a citric acid-nitrates self-propagating combustion method. The XRD results indicate that La0.8-xPrxSr0.2FeO3-δ samples calcined at 950 °C exhibit perovskite structure and there are no interactions between LPSF0.2 and SDC at 1100 °C. The average thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of LPSF0.2-SDC, BZCY and NiO-BZCY is 12.50 × 10-6 K-1, 13.51 × 10-6 K-1 and 13.47 × 10-6 K-1, respectively, which can provide good thermal compatibility between electrodes and electrolyte. An anode-supported single cell of NiO-BZCY|BZCY|LPSF0.2-SDC was successfully fabricated and operated from 700 °C to 550 °C with humidified hydrogen (~3% H2O) as fuel and the static air as oxidant. A high maximum power density of 488 mW cm-2, an open-circuit potential of 0.95 V, and a low electrode polarization resistance of 0.071 Ω cm2 were achieved at 700 °C. Preliminary results demonstrate that LPSF0.2 —SDC composite is a promising cathode material for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells.

Micron-scale characterization of mechanical stress is essential for physic failure studies in power devices. We report the use of Raman spectroscopy to measure mechanical stress in silicon power devices with spatial resolutions down to 500 nm. μ-Raman measurements were realized on diode and Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) cross sections unbiased and forward biased in order to map internal stress distributions. Temperature and stress contributions on Raman diffusion were deconvoluted fitting Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) and position of the stokes peak. For the first time, it was possible to quantify experimentally mechanical stress evolution during operation. These results give experimental data on thermo-mechanical coupling in power devices and could be able to support numerical models.

In the automotive industry long-term measurements and so-called fleet trials are an integral part of the development for decades in which vehicles are equipped with measurement technology and monitored during normal operation. Even in the development of rail vehicles such tests are performed, but because of the more complex infrastructure and the higher demands on the measurement equipment in comparison to other industries, they are still relatively rare. Especially in the segment of freight waggons the implementation of long-term measurements is a challenge. Therefore, a monitoring system has been developed, that meets those requirements. In the following article, this measurement system is presented on the basis of a concrete application. This monitoring system for freight waggons has been implemented and is currently used in a long-term measurement with three freight cars.

The sandwich construction is suitable for flat structural elements in many areas of technology. Compared to conventional designs, it offers real advantages in weight and other favourable properties, which are often used in vehicle construction. Considering life cycle costs the economic advantages of sandwich concepts become evident. In comparisons of net costs of raw material or semi-finished material the sandwich concepts appear more expensive than conventional concepts. The technical utility of sandwich panels can be significantly increased by integrating functions and the overall costs can be reduced by lean manufacturing processes. That's the way to open up the potentials of the sandwich construction for the cost-focused vehicle manufacturers as well. The practice of functional integration into sandwich structures and the creation of active surfaces are still young. The paper describes the current status and allows a view into the potentials of the design.

SBB worked out which seemed to be as impossible for main track lines in mixed traffic mode: The prediction of maintenance costs of tracks for new rolling stock. The method is based on the relational principle between maintenance on tracks and interaction parameters. Tests or simulations deliver the magnitude of interaction in future, simple scaling hence the associated costs. The new service is calculated realistic by retracing of actual services over the same track/switches. Main item of this method is to record the traffic loads on each track/switch. The look up tracks with dominant vehicles over time period with known history of maintenance in the same period and track delivers the direct costs. Different to break down of overall cost of track maintenance to interaction parameters the method is directly linked to real local damages and maintenance cost. Expandability of this method is given. The paper shows finally the evidence of punch marking of traffic in local maintenance histories.

An overview is given on testing technologies at three full-scale test rigs for wheel-rail applications. The test rigs allow the rolling of entire wheelsets on rail rollers at high speed or alternatively to roll a single wheel on a single rail section or switch component at realistic vertical and lateral forces. This way, the wear and rolling contact fatigue at wheels, rails, switches or weldings can be investigated. Furthermore, the test rigs are used for crack propagation investigations and tests at wheelset construction as well for the testing of noise absorbers and friction modifiers. The benefit of testing at rigs in combination with in-service testing consists in the saving of time and money and that all effects of the different testing conditions can be observed with respect to both partners - wheel and rail.

East Japan Railway Company (JR EAST) had repeated test runs for high speed railway service at a maximum 320 km/h speed on the Tohoku Shinkansen. Based on these test run results, we carried out development of series E5 Shinkansen EMU trains, and these trains started operation on March 5.2011. We have a through service operation using the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Morioka and the Akita Shinkansen from Morioka to Akita. The Tohoku Shinkansen is a dedicated line for high speed rail, but the Akita Shinkansen was originally constructed as a conventional line. Through service operation has several technical issues, so we had to struggle with these issues to raise train operation speed. The vehicles used for through service must be built by the narrow body size used on conventional lines. This configuration caused several difficult problems for raising operation speed, in environmental noise reduction, designing optimal bogies, and other areas. Now we have completed the development of the series E6 Shinkansen EMU that has the ability to run at a maximum speed of 320 km/h on the dedicated line and run through on both dedicating line and converted conventional line. Series E6 Shinkansen trains can run connecting with series E5 trains, and will be coupled and uncoupled at Morioka station in regular operations. Series E6 started operation on March 16.2013.

Some may remember when in their youth the tram driver refilled the sanding container placed under one of the seats with rather coarse grit. This grit helped to avoid collisions with the by-product of breath-taking dust. Today, high standards of safety and pollution control (in this case concerning dust) require high-tech sanding systems which have to work correctly according to the various requirements of railway operations. How safety is ensured, is shown below. .

During the repair of rail vehicles in aluminium integral construction different requirements must be observed. These include the development of special repair technologies, fixtures for a possible strain-free mounting of the vehicles and a careful analysis and the separation of the damaged area. The procedure during the repair is illustrated with the aid of examples and figures.

The simulation compares the performance of a railway vehicle having two 2-axle bogies either with quasi-rigidly guided wheelsets or a flexible primary suspension supplemented by inter-axle linkages also referred to as self-steering bogies. The inter-axle coupling of the wheelsets might be by mechanical or hydraulic means. Compared are the critical hunting speeds, wheel tread and flange wear calculated by means of a wear simulation program and equivalent stresses in the surface and subsurface of the contact patch. The bogie with the stiff primary suspension has a wheelbase of 2,56 m and the bogie with the directly coupled wheelsets of 1,8 m. The Critical speed is the velocity where the amplitude of the lateral oscillation of the wheelsets approaches zero. Wear is simulated by means of a process which runs in parallel with the dynamic simulation. The stress distribution in the contact (area and subsurface) patch is computed by means of the boundary element programme CONTACT which assumes the linear theory of elasticity. The simulation shows that the vehicle having self steering bogies has less wheel wear and with the exception of the 60 m radius curve, lower stresses. Furthermore it is proven that the frequently advanced argument that bogies having a direct coupling of the wheelsets perform unfavourably in curves of excess cant and in very sharp curves is false.

Predictive Maintenance as practiced by Nertus, a joint venture of Renfe and Siemens enables an extremely high performance and reliability of Velaro E high-speed trains over the total life-cycle of 30 to 40 years. Over the period of seven years, 26 Siemens-made trains are operating upon demanding terms achieving almost 100 % availability. Intelligent service concepts and predictive maintenance are the key success factors in this strategic optimization process. Hereby reductions of life-cycle costs as well as optimized maintenance costs are achieved. Not only due to speed but also to outstanding availability and reliability rates, Renfe high-speed trains have developed to an attractive alternative to air traffic.

The handling of obsolescence is gaining in importance for the railway sector. The increasing number of components with a short lifetime compared to the lifetime of the vehicle as well as the desire of cost transparency requires an anticipatory and life cycle accompanying obsolescence management. This article gives a definition of the term obsolescence with respect to the consequences for railway vehicles. Furthermore strategies of obsolescence management are explained and examples based on the DMU „INTEGRAL‟ are given.

The suspension monorail of Wuppertal in Germany has ordered new trains. In behalf of Vossloh-Kiepe Düsseldorf (general contractor and supplier of the electrical equipment) PROSE is responsible for the engineering of the bogy and carriage body as well as for the integration of all equipment. The challenge for PROSE and VKD engineers was to design a modern vehicle operating under the conditions of an old restricting infrastructure taking into account the very specific characteristics of a monorail application. The presentation gives an overview of the engineering process of the vehicles, the final design results and the achieved status of the vehicle manufacturing. The specific characteristics of the monorail system and the resulting requirements for vehicle development and realisation are described. Simulation results, needed for stress analysis and structural design, verified by measurements on existing trains will be shown as well as images of the final design, first manufactured car bodies and bogies, electronic components and vehicle production. An outlook for the next process steps resulting in initial operation and homologation will be given at the end of the presentation.

An integrated and sustainable mobility will remain a key challenge for transport policy in the future. Climate change and the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels will make it necessary to develop strategies and policies to ensure an integrated, interconnected and sustainable mobility. In this context, the rail system provides good opportunities to ensure a climate-friendly and CO2-neutral mobility. However, the developments of the past decades show that the position of the rail market has not expanded substantially, despite its potential regarding climate neutrality. Instead, still individual modes of transport dominate the transport sector. Therefore, a rethinking within the current framework and organizational structures is necessary. Also, a better account of user interests that goes beyond mere customer satisfaction surveys is crucial in shaping a sustainable future mobility.

A multitude of trends are changing the mobility behaviour in the future. Customer expectations can decreasingly be fulfilled by mobility providers in a conventional sense. In future so-called mobility integrators will be in demand increasingly. They integrate all potential elements of the chain of mobility. Concerning mobility integration the railway system in general and especially Deutsche Bahn AG play a decisive role associated with social responsibility. Even though the sector has done a large step forward towards the vision of a fully integrated mobility network, it is still a long way to go.
