Abstract
This thesis presents a concept called flow context, defined as any information that can be used to characterize the situation of a sequence of protocol data units, called a flow, within a network. Flow context is designed to enable the realization of context-aware networks: networks that can sense, process, disseminate and use context information in order to enable or trigger services, or modify and optimize their operation. The thesis discusses a conceptualization for flow context, and describes its characteristics. A semantic model for flows and flow context in the form of an OWL-DL ontology is developed. The various components of the flow context life cycle, consisting of the stages of sensing, processing, dissemination and use, arc described. To account for its multi-faceted nature, a multi-dimensional approach to sensing flow con text is adopted. Novel implementations for three exemplar sensors, including sensors for intrinsic flow context, node and device characteristics, and for device location, are pre sented. Mechanisms for locating flow context sensors and propagating context event notifications using a distributed hash table (DHT) are described and evaluated. Simulation results suggest that DHTs can provide decentralized and scalable solutions for flow context location and dissemination. In addition, a novel mode of context distribution called path-coupled flow context dissemination is described. An evaluation of semantic flow context processing using the RacerPro reasoner is presented. Various platform-specific reasoning modes are tested, including the use of queries, ABox modification, and incomplete reasoning. Finally, several application scenarios illustrating the potential uses of flow context in areas such as mobility and moving networks, quality of service, intelligent flow classification, network management, and other applications, are presented. Many of these scenarios are demonstrated through proof-of-concept implementations, which may be further evaluated and developed into full, working, and useful applications.

Abstract
Research in ubiquitous computing has traditionally focused on sensing and making use of user-related context. However, a pervasive computing environment is also a mobile computing environment, where QoS adaptation is often a major concern. We present an integrated framework applicable to both user- and network-oriented adaptation, that uses a common base for sensing context. Smart wireless access points called M-WASPs provide a wireless network infrastructure, and perform sensing, adaptation and other cognitive functions in a distributed fashion, within a pervasive computing environment.

Abstract
An important feature of future context-aware and adaptive networks would be the ability to provide QoS to user flows. Our approach enables end-hosts and other devices to expose and provide context information to the network to support underlying QoS mechanisms, including adaptation. We discuss the key elements of our approach and demonstrate its use in an experimental scenario.

Abstract
Next-generation Grids will require flexible and adaptive network infrastructures that would be able to provide the requisite quality of service for computational flows. We discuss a mechanism where network flows are tagged with network context information, triggering dynamic network services, including QoS and adaptation services. An incremental deployment strategy and some initial results are presented.

Abstract
The continued growth of Internet traffic associated with the popularity of online social networks (OSNs) raises the possibility that knowledge of the underlying social graph connecting users may be exploited to enhance content distribution and delivery. In our previous work, we found that partitioning OSN users and their data based on their social graph, and using the partitioning as basis for content placement decisions across cache servers yield significant improvements over randomly-partitioned implementations. In this paper we go beyond content placement and use the same partitioning scheme to push updates across distributed caches to maintain consistency in OSN state. To avoid making singular assumptions on the degree to which user interaction patterns are influenced either by social considerations or content popularity, we parameterized our experiments to determine the impact of various interaction mixes on different cache designs. We found that in the new hybrid scheme that combines "socially-aware" cooperative content placement, on one hand, with social graph-driven proactive content delivery on the other, significant performance benefit continues to be driven by the former rather than the latter. Consequently, the hybrid scheme is likewise sensitive to the granularity of graph partitioning, which in turn dictates cache sizes and the number of cache servers. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract
Network booting is widely used today, mostly for thin-client computing, cluster computing, and operating system installation. Popular protocols like trivial file transfer protocol (TFTP) and hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) are used to download operating system images. Network booting clients simultaneously downloading from a single server create a bottleneck at the server's link once the link capacity has been maximized. The result is a slowdown in the download time and the overall boot process. Several P2P network booting solutions exist, but they are implemented on top of a running operating system. In this paper, we propose a distributed downloading scheme at the network bootloader level using a BitTorrent-like protocol for network booting clients. We discuss the implementation of a new download protocol for iPXE, an open-source network bootloader, and evaluate the performance of TFTP, HTTP, and the proposed BitTorrent-like protocol by measuring their download times over varying file sizes and number of nodes. On 20 clients, simultaneously downloading a 500 MiB file using the proposed protocol resulted to a decrease in average download time of 51.6% compared to TFTP and 46.6% compared to HTTP. Abstract
Video-on-demand (VoD) is today's standard for viewing and sharing video content over the Internet. However, the conventional client-server approach to video on demand consumes a significant amount bandwidth, pushing content publishers and content delivery networks to examine other approaches such as the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) technologies to assist in video distribution. We studied the performance impact of peer localization strategies aimed at limiting traffic exchanges between autonomous systems (ASes), and our findings suggest that peer localization can improve streaming performance while reducing inter-AS traffic, to the potential benefit of users and providers, respectively. Using a hybrid adaptive localization strategy (HALS), we allow external peers into a local mix when a swarm is outside its peak, in order to ensure a steady supply of pieces and to maintain structural robustness. Though HALS introduces additional inter-domain traffic compared to a purely localized approach, its download performance is at par or slightly better, while further reducing the content publisher's total upload volume. Abstract
Networks are becoming service-aware implying that all relevant business goals pertaining to a service are fulfilled, and also the network resources are used optimally. Future Internet Networks (FIN) have time varying topology (e.g. such networks are envisaged in Autonomic Internet [1], FIND program [2], GENI program [3], FIRE program [4], Ambient Networks [5], Ad-hoc networks [6]) and service availability and service context change as nodes join and leave the networks. In this paper we propose and evaluate a new self-organising service management system that manages such changes known as the Overlay Management Backbones (OMBs). The OMB is a self-organising solution to the problem space in which each OMB node is dynamically assigned a different service context task. The selection of OMB nodes is conducted automatically, without the need of relatively heavy-weighted dynamic negotiations. Our solution relies on the scalability and dynamicity advantages of Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs). This system is needed to select continuously, automatically, and dynamically a set of network nodes, to become responsible for collecting the availability information of service context in the changing network. A crucial prerequisite for building context-aware networks is an integrated infrastructure for sensing, processing, managing and disseminating network context information to network entities and user-facing applications. This requirement is especially important in ambient networks, a class of networks that exploit the inherent heterogeneity seen in today's wireless networks in order to share diverse resources and services across different but cooperating networks. We discuss ContextWare, our architectural solution for making ambient networks context-aware, and present a programmable approach to its realization. Context awareness can help build dynamic networks by enabling them to automatically adapt to the user's activities, computational environment, and network conditions. Our approach in building context-aware networks uses flow context: information about the intrinsic and low-level characteristics of flows, as well as the nature of the applications, devices, and the activities, intentions, preferences or identities of the users that produce or consume them. We tag network flows with their associated context, enabling the information to be shared and acted upon within the network and end-devices.
