Adobe Premiere 4.2 easily wins top honors in a comparison of seven video-editing applications. This $795 behemoth can handle 99 audio and 99 video tracks, although it only supports one level of undo. Adobe packed Premiere with 76 transitions, 63 filters and such special effects as lens distort. Premiere turned in the fastest rendering times of the seven applications tested. Chroma keying and the capability to read Adobe Photoshop files allows users to animate photorealistic bit maps. Premiere supports a bevy of third-party filters and transitions, including MetaTool's Final FX and Avid's Transjammer. It runs on the Mac and Windows 95 and NT. Ulead's $350 Media Studio Pro 2.5 for Windows 3.51, 95 and NT merits commendation for being one of the least-expensive professional-quality editors on the market, while Star Media's $499 Video Action Pro for Windows 95 and NT is a professional-quality editor with plenty of special effects.
