Abstract
This article focuses on the problems faced by United Ways charitable organization. An influential minority of the 1,400 local United Ways in the U.S. had been agitating against their national umbrella organization, the United Way of America, and its president, Betty Beene. Some members defended Beene and her reforms. But others were demanding her resignation. The United Way continues to help people who need assistance. But a time when donors question the need for an organization that processes money to other charities, the organization has been convulsed by international squabbling over how it will govern itself. Unless it can find a way to agree both on a destination and a manager who can take it there quickly, the organization faces a future of slow decline.
