GEOGRAPHY -- Congresses, GEOGRAPHERS, LATIN Americanists, and CONFERENCES & conventions
The first meeting of the Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers was held in Monde in 1970, a time of change and discontent in the United States and also in the discipline of geography. This was reflected in the papers and discussions at the meeting and in the published Proceedings in 1971. The older more traditional geographers were confronted by younger geographers who pushed for new directions - spatial theory, statistical analysis, applied geography, and social relevance. The meeting was contentious; change did take place thereafter; and traditional and new approaches to Latin Americanist geography now share respect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
