In this article the authors discuss the importance of the United States Library of Congress Center for the Book and the influence of its director John Y. Cole in nurturing United States book history. The article presents information about scholarly papers and studies on the history of the book, including Elizabeth Eisenstein's "The Printing Press As an Agent of Change" and Robert Darnton's "The Business of Enlightenment: A Publishing History of the Encyclopédie, 1775-1800." The article also highlights some of the accomplishments of John Y. Cole and the Center.
