Structure and phases changes as well as hardness and strength of titanium and its alloys after pulsed plasma treatment have been investigated. It has been shown that treatment efficiency increased with treatment time and pulse energy increasing and amount of β-phase in initial metals decreasing.

From analysis of known data and own results, it is offered to use the protective coatings on the base of complex nitrides of transient metals. It was found that ion-plasma Ti-Zr-N coatings have about 1.5-4.0 times the heat and wear resistance of conventional TiN, TiCN, TiC coatings and an extended colour range.

The results of hot-corrosion resistance comparative tests of combined coatings deposited by thermal diffusion and plasma spraying methods under different consecutive order of intermetallic compounds and ceramic layers have been presented. The possibility of protective properties improving the plasma intermetallic coatings by means of laser melting is considered. The structure, phase and chemical composition of coatings have been investigated by optical metallography, microhardness measurement, X-ray analysis methods in initials conditions and after the tests as well.

Properties of laser melted surface layers produced using self-fluxing powder mixture of Ni-Cr-B-Si system and the same powders with enhanced Fe content alloyed with Co, Ti, Nb, Mo have been investigated. Composition of powder material is determined which does not cause of defect formation under laser melting and makes possible to produce a good mechanical and tribological properties of treated surface.

The structure and phase compositions of TiN coating were investigated by diffraction electron microscopy methods. TiN coating was deposited on stainless steel surface by plasma assisted electric arc method. It is shown that coating obtained has a laminated structure. Size of crystallites, extent of disorientation between coating substructure elements and value of internal elastic stresses are to be found depending on substrate bias voltage.

Effect of irradiation with high power nanosecond pulse ion beams on physical and chemical properties of surface layers, fatigue strength and heat resistance of titanium alloys has been investigated. It was found formation of various shaped crater-like microdefects on the surface of these alloys under the action of ion beam pulses with high current density. The main disadvantages of up-to-date ion accelerators preventing their application on an industrial scale, such as a low uniformity of current density distribution throughout the beam cross section as well as insufficient beam parameters stability.

It is established that Me-based coatings (Me=Ti, Cr, Zr, Mo and W) deposited by means of self-ion assisted deposition (SIAD) technique have a significant effect on hydrophobic properties of rubber surface that explained by different chemical interaction of metal base of coatings with rubber components.

The change in the structure-phase state of Al-Cu-Mg alloy (D16) implanted with 245 MeV krypton ions up to the doses 1013 and 3.1014 cm-2 has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy method. Implantation leads to a partial dissolution of θ'-phase inclusions and the appearance of fine-dispersion S'-phase precipitates. Both processes (θ'-phase dispersion and S'-phase precipitation) are responsible for the hardening of near-surface layers of implanted alloys.

Dependence of wear resistance of hard alloys on their surface oxidation has been investigated by ultraviolet spectrometry methods. Preliminary surface treatment by power ion beam has a significant effect on the form and intensity of oxidation. The correlation between the parameters of zone structure of polyoxide films formed on the surface of hard alloys and wear resistance of cutting instruments manufactured from these alloys was established. A degree of this correlation is determined by the mechanism of fracture (wear) of a tool material.

Processes of ion electrotransport in oxide film on the surface of α-Fe with predominant cubic texture in the temperature range of 370-500°C have been considered. It is shown that growth of thin two-phase oxide film at initial stage of oxidation process is caused by oxygen ions transport toward of reaction zone on metal-oxide boundary.

A technique of determination of the process occurred under chemical hydrodynamic non-contact polishing crystal surface has been proposed. To simulation of the steady-state polishing process, a balance equation was used for diffusion, convective and chemical fluxes of etching components. It was established that a macrorelief of treated surface depends only on the relative speed of moving pad concerning to treated specimen, a distance between the pad and specimen, and diffusivity of active component of etching solution. As a result, the shape of treated surface does not depend on concentration of active component in etching solution and on the constant of chemical reaction.

A technology of surface alloying based on the use of high-speed pulsed plasma stream and electric discharges has been studied. The high speed of metal-containing plasma stream and simultaneous effect of pulsed electromagnetic field provide mixing of fused alloy with partially-melted surface of the item. As a result, a spreading the interface boundary between the coating and substrate takes place.

Mass transfer and strengthening in tool steels under plasma-detonation treatment have been investigated. Application of the new surface strengthening technique allows to increase significantly the velocity and temperature of treated jet. Mass transfer parameters are changed in this circumstance, too. Light element mass transfer coefficients determined were comparable to these in liquid phase.

Researches of sputtering of composite W-Cu material were performed. The partial coefficients of composite components sputtering have been measured. Composite surface modification under ion irradiation in plasma has been investigated. It is established that partial sputtering coefficients of each of components (W and Cu) in composite are significantly reduced compared with these of pure elements. Composite surface modification develops rapidly due to selective sputtering of copper component of the composite.

Rotation ductility of metals and alloys due to formation and motion of reorientation bands in the field of elastic stresses of accommodation disclinations in grain boundaries has been considered. Conditions for reorientarion bands movement were determined depending on temperature, chemical composition and structure fragmentation.

Processes of formation of wear- and heat-resistant three-layer coatings for protection of working surface of dies for Al profiles extrusion up to 600°C have been investigated as well as coating physical, chemical and performance properties. A technological process is proposed for dies reconditioning which increases their durability significantly.

By means of X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and microhardness measurements effects of a dense compression nitrogen plasma jet on the structure, phase composition, surface morphology and mechanical properties of carbon steels have been investigated. Plasma jets were generated with the help of magnetoplasma compressor under simultaneous plasma acceleration and compression due to interaction between longitudinal constituent of electric current and intrinsic azimuthal magnetic field.

Mechanical properties of tool steels after volume heat treatment and plasma surface strengthening have been investigated by means of static tensile tests. The method of determination of local mechanical properties of strengthened metal layers has been developed. A complex effect of volume-plasma strengthening on tool steels strength and ductility characteristics has been studied.

Electroinsulation or electroconductive surface oxide films on aluminium alloys formed by oxidation or chemical polishing treatment of aluminium alloys in different electrolyte compositions have been investigated. An application of these films in radio measuring instruments is proposed.
