Abstract
The article presents poetry criticism of the poem "The Iliad," written by Homer and translated by Alexander Pope. Particular focus is given to the role of sentimentality in Pope's translation. According to the author, scholars have mischaracterized Pope as being hostile to literary sentimentalism. It is suggested that in emphasizing feelings of sympathy and distress in his translation, he was reflecting 18th-century values onto the poem.
