Abstract
A literary criticism is presented of the 19th century American fiction books "A Modern Instance," by William Dean Howells and "The Deserted Wife," by E. (Emma) D. E. N. Southworth. Particular focus is given to the depiction of divorce within the aforementioned novels, including in regard to the authors' use of sentimentalism and narration.

Abstract
The article presents literary criticism of the books "Native Son" by Richard Wright and "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Particular focus is given to the novels' relationship to sentimental domestic fiction and to white women's activism during the New Deal era. According to the author, Wright's novel borrows from the sentimental fiction genre in order to show the social costs of sentimental activism. Topics discussed include maternalism, welfare, and racial inequality.

The article discusses a controversy surrounding the authorship of the 1860 lyric poem "Rock Me to Sleep" by Elizabeth Akers Allen. It examines claims by a New Jersey legislator named Alexander McWhorter Ball to have authored the poem and explores an article by Allen published in the newspaper the "New York Evening Post" in June of 1865. The author considers Allen's claims concerning her professionalism and Ball's amateur status.
