Bible as literature.
- Abstract
-
The twentieth century has seen a rise in recognizing the Bible not only as historical or theological work but also as a piece of literature, and the natural progression of this idea is to apply the same methods used for literary texts to the biblical text. However, many movements in literary studies seem antithetical to evangelical ideas of interpretation, as the goal of evangelical interpretation is always to find God’s intended meaning for the text. This thesis will explore the features of one literary theory, New Historicism, as presented in Practicing New Historicism, and ask if this theory can be made compatible with evangelical presuppositions, or even offer any unique insights for biblical interpretation.

Great Commission (Bible), Discipling (Christianity), Evangelistic work., and Leadership.
- Abstract
-
The Great Commission is the call of Jesus to his people to go out into the world and make disciples. The universal leadership model presents an opportunity for disciples/leaders to step up and fulfill the Great Commission. The church should be involved in discipleship training, outreaches and supporting the issues that are aligned with Christian ideology and important to people in the communities they serve. An effective universal leadership model should include diversity, training, desired change, accountability and effectiveness of change. In so doing, the church can then find parishioners within the church who may be transformed into disciples/leaders and communities will become stronger because of the immersion of disciples into our communities. The researcher utilized a 50-question anonymous survey taken by 161 participants. The questionnaire was presented electronically to Christians and non-Christians over the age of 18. The data gathered should encourage leaders to lead from the top, re-evaluate disciple/leadership training programs and to develop leaders with a heart for fulfilling the Great Commission.

- Abstract
-
The Marvelous Maker is a creation redemption parable that tells the story of creation, fall, sacrifice, and redemption. This rhyming retelling uncovers how the Maker fabulously creates a universe for His glory and for His children to enjoy. Everything is perfect and good until the Tricky Tempter enters the scene and tempts the Maker's children, which brings a horrible darkness to creation and allows the Tempter to take the children captive. The Maker sees His children's hardened hearts and their suffering and chooses to rescue them despite the cost. He sacrifices His life to bring healing to His children. Their relationship restored, the Maker then trains the children to fight against the Tricky Tempter. The children's hearts and eyes are opened as they realize that the Maker is good, and they choose to follow, love, and praise Him. Each of The Marvelous Maker's forty lines is based on Scripture, encapsulating the message of the gospel and sharing it with readers in a picture-book format that is poetic but powerful.

Women in the Bible
- Abstract
-
For too long the women of the Bible have been depicted in one-dimensional terms. On one side are saints, such as Mary, while on the other are'bad girls,'such as Eve and Jezebel. Just as often, the female characters of the Bible are simply ignored. However, the women of the Bible are complex, multidimensional individuals whose lives are inspiring, funny, and tragic in ways too many of us never hear.In this first of two volumes, Lynn Japinga acquaints us with the women of the Old Testament. From flawed heroes like Ruth and Rahab to fierce fighters like Deborah and Jael to tragic characters like Jephthah's daughter and the unnamed concubine of the book of Judges, readers will encounter a wealth of foremothers in the faith in all their messy, yet redeemable, humanity. This Bible study introduces and retells every female character who contributes to one or more Old Testament stories, diving deeply into what each woman's story means for us today with questions for reflection and discussion.

Caravan Bear once again hitches up Hector the horse to the brightly painted gypsy-style caravan and, with Whitby the dog and Christopher Rabbit, set off in search of new adventures. The travelling life of the caravan and its occupants provide the opportunity for Rabbit to share stories from the Bible with other animals they meet and they join Caravan Bear, Whitby and Hector in listening - and learning from - the stories. He is frequently interrupted by questions from his listeners, the kind of questions any child - or adult - might ask.The real and often humorous events that happen to Rabbit and his friends are mirrored by the stories from the Bible enabling children to realise that the stories have relevance and meaning today. The Animals'Caravan has echoes of children's classics such as Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland, as the caravan travellers form a great friendship on their journey together. Rabbit also finds himself on a journey of faith as he and his new friends wrestle with some of the often difficult concepts in the bible, thereby gaining fresh insights and understanding of God's loving involvement and care for the world.

Heroes in the Bible--Biography and Heroes in literature
- Abstract
-
Approaching the Bible in an original way—comparing biblical heroes to heroes in world literature—Elliott Rabin addresses a core biblical question: What is the Bible telling us about what it means to be a hero? Focusing on the lives of six major biblical characters—Moses, Samson, David, Esther, Abraham, and Jacob—Rabin examines their resemblance to hero types found in (and perhaps drawn from) other literatures and analyzes why the Bible depicts its heroes less gloriously than do the texts of other cultures: • Moses founds the nation of Israel—and is short-tempered and weak-armed. • Samson, arrogant and unhinged, can kill a thousand enemies with his bare hands. • David establishes a centralized, unified, triumphal government—through pretense and self-deception. • Esther saves her people but marries a murderous, misogynist king. • Abraham's relationships are wracked with tension. • Jacob fathers twelve tribes—and wins his inheritance through deceit. In the end, is God the real hero? Or is God too removed from human constraints to even be called a “hero”? Ultimately, Rabin excavates how the Bible's unique perspective on heroism can address our own deep-seated need for human-scale heroes.

- Abstract
-
Although the Bible records over eight passages which directly condemns homosexuality, many African-American churches are silent on this controversial issue. The purpose of this thesis is to present information that suggests that the African-American church compromises on this Biblical principle, by embracing homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle, both outside and within the church. The church leadership has chosen to either overlook or accept this lifestyle. Based on statistical surveys and interviews, this project will offer practical and Biblical solutions and advice to all churches and ethnic groups, assisting them in dealing with the issue of homosexuality and gay marriage. The focus would also minister to those individuals and families of those who are “enslaved” by this non-Biblical lifestyle.

- Abstract

The ancient Genesis creation myth is traditionally read as establishing a hierarchy between the genders, in which the masculine is dominant and the feminine is submissive. Jacques Lacan's self-identification theory establishes a similar hierarchy, despite being conceived far more recently in the twentieth century. In Lacan's conception, the male child must escape from the feminine influence of his mother in order to fully become himself. There is no space for the female in his theory, even a female child. Using each work, as well as John Milton's Paradise Lost and William Blake's Milton: a poem, this project traces the traditional interpretation of gender hierarchy through retellings of the biblical creation myth. The focus is on the two principle female characters who have emerged from Genesis and its retellings: Eve, the first woman of the biblical creation myth, Adam's wife and eventual mother of all; and Sin, Milton's creation, Satan's daughter and lover. Both traditional, misogynistic readings and feminist readings were consulted. The traditional interpretations established the subordinate feminine and were also concerned with the threat of feminine sexuality and the damaging, sometimes fatal influence the feminine has over the masculine. The feminist interpretations undermined these findings, instead reading representations of a feminine who is close to, if not equal to, the masculine. The results reveal a path that both challenges and reinforces traditional gender hierarchy. Finally, Genesis is revisited, this time through an application of Lacan's self-identification theory. Instead of Adam, however, Eve is found to occupy the space of the male child, negating the need to gender the space at all.

READER ALERT Three things to know about this book before you buy it: 1. If you can't handle jokes about Jesus being cranky when he was hungry — turn back now. 2. If you think that the disciples were perfect men — prepare to be disillusioned. 3. If you think Jesus only has really smart and gifted people for friends — guess again. Are you up for a crazy ride through Scripture? Do you want to be in on the jokes and the hidden treasures in many of the passages you thought you knew by heart? Do you want to see how, despite the inevitable weaknesses of our human nature, God has a plan for us? If you said yes, then this book is for you. In Clueless in Galilee: A Fresh Take on the Gospels, author Mac Barron assures us that Jesus loves us, even though we're human. We know this, because the Bible says so. Over and over and over again. With its hilarious, sometimes irreverent, and always humble reflections, this book will make you laugh and help you look at the Bible — and yourself — in a whole new way. “Funny and off-kilter in the best way, Mac Barron will help you look with fresh eyes at people in the Bible you thought you knew and discover that they were all too human.” — Bishop Robert Reed, The CatholicTV Network ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mac Barron grew up in South Georgia, met his wife at church camp, and taught for twelve years before becoming a high school librarian.
