Three Apple Macintosh-based Bible study data base programs are reviewed. Zondervan Electronic Publishing's macBible 2.5 performs very complex searches with a fast and flexible text-retrieval system. Users can adjust text spacing and size, and locate text blocks using AND, OR and NOT word and phrase searches. macBible comes in several formats and versions, including Hebrew, Greek New Testament, King James, Revised Standard and others. Prices range from $129.95 to $199.95. Beacon Technology's HyperBible 2.0 is a HyperCard-based Bible-study package that incorporates sounds and maps into the data base with a variety of cross-reference notes and aids. Text is poorly displayed, only two versions are available, and the program requires large hard disk space. System errors make this $199 package all the more cumbersome to operate. Bible Research Systems' $99.95 Verse Search 5.0 provides translations including Greek and Hebrew Bible versions, a dictionary and thesaurus, but it lacks the NOT option for text searches. Verse Search provides the most significant indexing features, but modules must be bought separately.
