If ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) is to enhance physical environments then early and accurate assessment of alternative solutions will be necessary to avoid costly deployment of systems that fail to meet requirements. This paper presents APEX, a prototyping framework that combines a 3D Application Server with a behaviour modeling tool. The contribution of this framework is that it allows exhaustive analysis of the behaviour models that drive the prototype while at the same time enabling immersive exploration of a virtual environment simulating the proposed system. The development of prototypes is supported through three layers: a simulation layer (using OpenSimulator); a modelling layer (using CPN Tools) and a physical layer (using external devices and real users). APEX allows movement between these layers to analyse different features, from user experience to user behaviour. The multi layer approach makes it possible to express user behaviour in the modelling layer, provides a way to reduce the number of real users needed by adding simulated avatars, and supports user testing of hybrids of virtual and real components as well as exhaustive analysis. This paper demonstrates the approach by means of an example, placing particular emphasis on the simulation of virtual environments, low cost prototyping and the formal analysis capabilities.

Communications is becoming increasingly important to the operation of protection and control schemes. Although offering many benefits, using standards-based communications, particularly IEC 61850, in the course of the research and development of novel schemes can be complex. This paper describes an open-source platform which enables the rapid prototyping of communications-enhanced schemes. The platform automatically generates the data model and communications code required for an intelligent electronic device to implement a publisher-subscriber generic object-oriented substation event and sampled-value messaging. The generated code is tailored to a particular system configuration description (SCD) file, and is therefore extremely efficient at runtime. It is shown here how a model-centric tool, such as the open-source Eclipse Modeling Framework, can be used to manage the complexity of the IEC 61850 standard, by providing a framework for validating SCD files and by automating parts of the code generation process. The flexibility and convenience of the platform are demonstrated through a prototype of a real-time, fast-acting load-shedding scheme for a low-voltage microgrid network. The platform is the first open-source implementation of IEC 61850 which is suitable for real-time applications, such as protection, and is therefore readily available for research and education.

- Abstract
-
To establish seamless and highly robust content distribution, we proposed the new concept of Inter-Stream Forward Error Correction (FEC), an efficient data recovery method leveraging several video streams. Our previous research showed that Inter-Stream FEC had significant recovery capability compared with the conventional FEC method under ideal modeling conditions and assumptions. In this paper, we design the Inter-Stream FEC architecture in detail with a view to practical application. The functional requirements for practical feasibility are investigated, such as simplicity and flexibility. Further, the investigation clarifies a challenging problem: the increase in processing delay created by the asynchronous arrival of packets. To solve this problem, we propose a pragmatic parity stream construction method. We implement and evaluate experimentally a prototype system with Inter-Stream FEC. The results demonstrate that the proposed system could achieve high recovery performance in our experimental environment.

4D simulation, building information modeling, virtual construction, computer simulation and virtual prototyping are emerging topics in the building construction industry. These techniques not only relate to the buildings themselves, but can also be applied to other forms of construction, including bridges. Since bridge construction is a complex process involving multiple types of plant and equipment, applying such virtual methods benefits the understanding of all parties in construction practice. This paper describes the relationship between temporary platforms, plant and equipment resources and a proposed-built model in the construction planning and use of Virtual Prototyping Simulation (VPS) to implement different construction scenarios in order to help planners identify an optimal construction plan. A case study demonstrates the use of VPS integrated with temporary platform design and plant and equipment-resource allocation to generate different construction scenarios.

Fabrication of polymeric micro/nanofibers with controllable size, density, orientation, and composition is required for their translation into functional devices and materials. Electrospinning (ES) is a frequently used fiber fabrication technique, where ES parameters such as the applied electric field strength, architecture of the setup, and solution composition are manipulated to control the fiber properties. Here, we present a bench-top method for fabricating miniaturized, integrated, and highly tunable ES setups based on shrinkable polymer substrates. We show that using a combination of numerical modeling and controlling different parameters in the ES setup, including the spinneret to collector distance, and spinneret and collector designs, it is possible to tune the density, alignment, and orientation of electrospun fibers. In this way, we have produced 300-600 nm wide poly(ethylene oxide) fibers arranged as nonwoven mats on planar electrodes, aligned fibers on electrode edges, and individual suspended fibers spanning gaps between collector electrodes. The ability to rapidly prototype ES setups should enable us to study the effects of spinneret-collector configurations on fiber morphology, distribution, and conformation and to aid in the development of miniaturized ES setups designed to serve specific applications.

- Abstract

This paper presents prototyping and experimental methods for validating design of recreational waterslides obtained using computer-aided modeling and simulation technology. A scaled physical prototype of the waterslide designed in computer-aided design (CAD) is first fabricated using a rapid prototyping machine. The surface of the prototype is polished and treated to reduce friction, which plays a key role in this study. The object sliding path and time are then captured using a high-speed digital camera. The path and time are compared with those obtained from computer simulations. The simulation and experimental results agree well; therefore, validating the accuracy of the simulation method. A real-world waterslide configuration is employed for the study. This proposed method offers a cost effective alternative for verifying design of waterslides, especially for those scenarios where simulations are not yet available.

- Abstract
-
Recently, usability assessment of user interfaces (UIs) in the early design stage has become indispensable for the human-centered design of information appliances. Several digital prototyping tools of the UI software, in which the UI behavior can be simulated, have been developed so far. However, some problems can arise when using them for the usability assessment, such as: a lack of simulation fidel- ity, time-consuming modeling work, and lack of systematic usability assessment functions. To solve these problems, we developed a tool for virtual 3D prototyping and usability assessment of information appliances. First, we extended the specification of UsiXML (which is the XML-compliant UI description language) so that the static structure both of the logical elements displayed on the UI and of the physical elements placed on the housings can be modeled. Secondly, we developed 3D prototyping and simulation functions so that the extended UsiXML is combined with the 3D CAD mod- els of the housings and where the interaction can be simulated based on the dynamic-behavior model of the UsiXML. Finally, we developed the automated user test and usability assessment functions which are connected to the models of the extended UsiXML. An example of the efficient usability assessment and the UI redesign using a 3D digital prototype of a digital camera is shown.

- Abstract
-
The ITER tokamak (Latin for the way) is the next step toward the realization of electricity-producing fusion power plants, since it has been designed to reach the plasma burning condition. The Central Safety System for Nuclear Risk (CSS) is the control system in charge to assure nuclear safety for the ITER plant, the personnel, and the environment. Since the CSS is a critical safety system, its validation and commissioning play an important role, and the required level of reliability must be demonstrated. In such a scenario, it is strongly recommended to use modeling and simulation tools since the early design phase. Indeed, mathematical models will help in the definition of the control system requirements. These models can be used for the rapid prototyping of the safety system, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations can be performed to assess the performance of the control hardware against a plant simulator. This paper introduces the methodology and the software/hardware architecture used to develop both a CSS prototype and a ITER plant model suitable for the test and validation of this prototype.

The work described in this article presents how we use COOPN in the context of the MDA (Model Driven Architecture) philosophy for prototyping Domain Specific Languages. With this principle we increase the abstraction of COOPN language representation enabling standard data interchange with other applications that use the same approach. In particular we will present the architecture of the transformation from Domain Specific Languages; its advantages concerning the ability to have COOPN models as a standard format for representing the semantics of Domain Specific Languages and to reuse software prototyping and testing techniques developped for this formalism. As example we will show how our work is proceeding towards transformation from UML to COOPN. We also argue how our approach can be easily used in order to produce rapid system prototyping and verification for Domain Specific Languages (DSLs).

This paper describes a new rapid prototyping-based design framework for exploring and validating complex multiprocessor architectures for multimedia applications. The new methodology combines a typical ASIC flow with an FPGA flow focused on rapid prototyping. In order to make an exhaustive verification of the system architecture, a reference model that specifies the hardware implementation is used for validating both, HDL description and emulated system. Functional coverage in addition to traditional code coverage is used to test 100% of data, control and structural hazards of the system architecture. The reference model is also part of a stand-alone simulation environment. This allows hardware and application development be supported by a unique system model.

- Abstract
-
The inherent uncertainty and complexity of construction work make construction planning a particularly difficult task for project managers due to the need to anticipate and visualize likely future events. Conventional computer-assisted technology can help but is often limited to the constructability issues involved. Virtual prototyping, however, offers an improved method through the visualization of construction activities by computer simulation - enabling a range of what-if questions to be asked and their implications on the total project to be investigated. This paper describes the use of virtual prototyping to optimize construction planning schedules by analyzing resource allocation and planning with integrated construction models, resource models, construction planning schedules and site-layout plans. A real-life case study is presented that demonstrates the use of a virtual prototyping enabled resource analysis to reallocate space, logistic on access road and arrange tower cranes to achieve a 6-day floor construction cycle.

This paper studies the benefits that haptic feed-back can provide in performing complex maintenance tasks using virtual mock-ups. We have carried out user study that consisted on two experiments where participants had to perform an accessibility task. A human-scale string-based haptic interface was used to provide the operator with haptic stimuli. A prop was used to provide grasp feedback. A mocap system tracks user's hand and head movements while a 5DT data-glove is used to measure finger flexion. In the first experiment the effect of haptic (collision) and visual feedback are investigated. In the second experiment we investigated the effect of haptic guidance on operator performance. The results were analyzed in terms of task completion time and collision avoidance. Experiments show that haptic stimuli proved to be more efficient than visual ones. In addition, haptic guidance helped the operators to correct trajectories and hence improve their performance.

A 3D CAM tool for rapid prototyping and small-scale production of MEMS devices based on excimer laser ablation process has been developed. The system's algorithms use the 3D geometry of a microstructure, defined in a CAD model, and parameters that influence the process (etch rate, wall angle, stitching errors, etc.) to automatically generate a precise NC part program for the excimer laser machine. The performance of the system has been verified by NC part program generation for several 3D microstructures and subsequent machining trials. Stitching errors of 23.4±2.2 μm wide and 3.4±1.5 μm height were observed when overlap size between adjacent volumes were zero, when ablating 100x100 μm features in PC at fluence of 0.9 J/cm2 using a workpiece dragging technique. When the size of the overlap was optimised by software based on optimal process parameters determined by Taguchi design of experiment method (DOE) and incorporated in the mask design the maximum stitching errors are reduced to 13.4±2.2 μm wide and 1.4±0.9 μm in height under the same conditions. Employing the hexagonal shaped mask with incorporated size of the image overlap, horizontal-stitching errors with width of 2.4±0.2 μm wide and 1.4±0.2 μm high were observed. The software simplifies part program creation and is useful for excimer laser operators who currently use a tedious trial and error process to generate microstructure parts.

This paper is about the automated production of dialogue models. The goal is to propose and validate a methodology that allows the production of finalized dialogue models (i.e. dialogue models specific for given applications) in a few hours. The solution we propose for such a methodology, called the Rapid Dialogue Prototyping Methodology (RDPM), is decomposed into five consecutive main steps, namely: (1) producing the task model; (2) deriving the initial dialogue model; (3) using a Wizard-of-Oz experiment to instantiate the initial dialogue model; (4) using an internal field test to refine the dialogue model; and (5) using an external field test to evaluate the final dialogue model. All five steps will be described in more detail in the document.

The goal of this contribution is to present how the notion of dialogue management evaluation was integrated in the rapid dialogue prototyping methodology (RDPM), designed and experimented by the authors in the framework of the InfoVox project. We first describe the proposed RDPM. The general idea of this methodology is to produce, for any given application, a quickly deployable dialogue-driven interface and to improve this interface through an iterative process based on Wizard-of-Oz experiments (i.e. dialogue simulations). More precisely, the methodology is decomposed into five consecutive steps, namely: (1) producing a task model for the targeted application; (2) automatically deriving an initial dialogue model (and the associated dialogue-driven interface) from the produced task model; (3) using the generated interface to carry out Wizard-of-Oz experiments to improve the initial dialogue model; (4) carrying out an internal field test to further refine the dialogue model; and (5) carrying out an external field test to evaluate the final dialogue model and dialogue-driven interface. In a second part, we more specifically focus on evaluation. We describe the integration of various evaluation aspects in the design steps corresponding to the internal and external field tests. The internal field test involved 20 internal users (typically the designers of the system, other members of the involved laboratories, willing relatives, etc.) and was used to further adapt the prototype. The various modifications made were validated during a second internal field test with a reduced group of seven users. The external field test involved a larger population of 50 external users (i.e. users that did not have any a priori knowledge of the system), randomly selected in all French speaking Swiss cantons. Its main goal was the final evaluation of the produced dialogue model, dialogue-driven interface, and evaluation procedure. Both the internal and external field tests were carried out over the phone. Finally, we concentrate on the assessment results obtained during the external field test for the InfoVox prototype. We first present the retrospective predominant modality and correlation analyses that were integrated in the external field test and then show how the obtained evaluation data can also be used in a more prospective way to derive useful hints for a better dialogue design (prospective correlation analysis). All the presented concepts are systematically illustrated by examples taken from the experiments that were carried out in the InfoVox project.

The paper presents a methodology and its application for virtual prototyping in the design and development of low platform container flat rail cars in India. This is achieved using Nucars and Adams Rail software. The optimization of suspension design through simulation, resulting in successful oscillation trials at 110 kmph is demonstrated. Finite element models are developed to analyze structural integrity of the under frame as well as the bolster of the rail car using DISP3 and NISA software. This procedure completely eliminates the need of fabrication and testing of prototypes at the development stage. This methodology is useful for developing better quality rail cars at low design cycle cost and time and gives a cutting edge over competitors.

- Abstract

Virtual prototyping practice and technologies are developing fast and moving from the traditional industrial sectors that have pushed their development (automotive, aeronautical) to new sectors, like the fashion sector, that is far from them, but anyway economically important. The concept of Virtual Prototyping has been built upon a bottom up approach. Tools oriented to different phases of the product development process (CAD, CAM, CAE, etc.) have been developed separately, without any intersection or anything in common among them, except for the idea that the geometrical model of the object is the reference point for the all phases. Actually, each of these tools simulates a single aspect/characteristic of the future product: the shape, the appearance, the manufacturability, the strain, the physical behaviour, etc. On top of them, Virtual Prototyping was developed with multiple aims. First, it aimed at integrating into a unique object all the characteristics that are uniquely formalised, and that can be uniquely simulated, so allowing an integration of all the interrelations among the all product aspects. Another characteristic of Virtual Prototyping concerns its use in validation. This has raised the need to make compatible the context where the prototype can or could be virtually operating, in terms of digital modelling. Therefore, the Virtual Prototype can be seen as a correlated set of dedicated models able to simulate specific aspects and models of interaction modalities. The paper presents the key aspects of Virtual Prototyping and enabling technologies in the fashion sector, presenting their benefits and the shortcomings that still require research and development.

- Abstract

Significant savings in cost and time can be achieved in rapid prototyping (RP) by manufacturing multiple parts in a single setup to achieve efficient machine volume utilization. This paper reports the design and implementation of a system for the optimal layout planning of 3D parts for a RP process. A genetic algorithm (GA) based search strategy has been used to arrive at a good packing layout for a chosen set of parts and RP process. A two stage approach has been proposed to initially short-list acceptable orientations for each part followed by the search for a layout plan which optimizes in terms of final product quality and build time. The GA uses a hybrid objective function comprising of the weighted measures like part build height, staircase effect, volume and area-of-contact of support structures. In essence it captures the key metrics of efficiency and goodness of packing for RP. The final layout plan is produced in the form of a composite part CAD model which can be directly exported to a RP machine for manufacturing. Design methodology of the system has been presented with some representative case studies.

For low volume production or for rapid prototyping, sheet metal stamping tools can be made by an assemblage of steel sheets or layers and joined by several techniques (such as screws, bolts, brazing, adhesive). However, an important problem in the design and the production of such tools is their mechanical behaviour, in particular the strength of joining techniques which is crucial in the aim of achieving the high required reliability of tools. If tools mechanical behaviour can be mastered and accurately predicted this can increase the tools life duration and be more beneficial for the manufacturing community. In order to properly predict the mechanical behaviour of tools, numerical simulation of stamping taking into account, elastic deformation of tools within a coupled FE analysis is needed. However, simulation results show that the effort and computational times required for such a coupled simulation, in particular in a general three-dimensional (3D) case, could be prohibitive and unrealistic. In this paper, the authors proposed and developed a numerical procedure in two steps, which has the advantage of decoupling the simulation of the blank forming and the stress analysis of the elastic tools. Numerical application is presented for a layered stamping punch, based on the Stratoconception® rapid prototyping process, joined by screws in addition to an epoxy adhesive. The results are focussed on the screws behaviour, showing the potential interest of the developed procedure and numerical modelling technologies in designing layered tools joined by screws.

Using medical models built with Rapid Prototyping (RP) technologies represents a new approach for surgical planning and simulation. These techniques allow one to reproduce anatomical objects as 3D physical models, which give the surgeon a realistic impression of complex structures before a surgical intervention. The shift from the visual to the visual-tactile representation of anatomical objects introduces a new kind of interaction called 'touch to comprehend'. As can be seen, from the presented case studies of maxillo-cranio-facial surgery, the RP models are very well suited for use in the diagnosis and the precise preoperative simulation of skeleton modifying interventions.
