Abstract
This article examines the role of laser scanning in engineering internal components to fit within tight surroundings. The problem with verifying the fit of components produced by rapid prototyping is that their tolerances are typically much looser than the finished parts. So they provide only a rough idea of how the assembly fits together, which often is not enough for a groundbreaking design. Some companies have used a service bureau to reverse-engineer the rapid prototype parts to an accuracy of 0.001 in., making it easy to distinguish between problems caused by prototype inaccuracies and problems with the design.

The article reports on the launch of Sunstone ECOsystem Design Environment, an online prototyping design in the production of printed circuit board (PCB) by Sunstone Circuits in the U.S. The site provides necessary knowledge, capabilities and expertise for production for designers, vendors and suppliers. It is composed of four discrete segments including design packages and software, and sourcing and tracking of PCB components. Furthermore, the company also offers PCB23, a complete design solution for the industry.

The article reports that Open Virtual Platforms (OVP) was launched by the Imperas Ltd. to establish an open standard solution for developers to quickly and inexpensively simulate embedded software on system-on-chip (SoC) designs. It stated that the OVP Web site which is found at www.OVP-world.org serves as the portal for OVP with informations reagrding technology, discussion forums for the OVP community and links of all OVP components that can be downloaded. Furthermore, the site provides presentations, datasheets, videos, demonstrations, discussion forms and press information.

Abstract
The article reports that combining a 300-mA LDO linear regulator with a low-current ;uP reset in half the space of two discrete devices, the 3- by 2.85-mm AAT3258 minimizes board size for portable products like cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and notebook computers. With separate input pins, the regulator also allows designers to operate each function from independent sources and more easily and efficiently configure their design. It features very fast startup and shutdown timing to regulate power for microprocessor blocks that quickly turn to full power from sleep mode and delivers very fast transient response time to react quickly to load current changes--important for such applications as GSM phones, which turn on and off quickly to transmit and receive data. The LDO comes in either 12-pin QFN 4- by 4-mm or wafer bumping packaging. he user has three choices of termination: Program the timer, program the current, or rely on an external means such as a DSP or microcontroller. The one-time programmable function allows engineers to program the output voltage for each regulator onsite in the range from 1.8 to 3.3 V in steps of 100 mV, allowing for fast prototyping as well as full-production ramp-up.

Abstract
This article reports that a flexible automotive reference platform centered on Xilink field programmable gate array technology addresses the need for rapid design prototyping for use in automotive/telematics applications. The approach includes small modules that interconnect to form a complete system. The core of the system is a central processing unit module with memory that includes flash, SmartMedia flash, and SDRAM/DDRAm. As with any reference platform, embedded software is needed to run the system. The reference platform is genuinely a full system, complete with hardware, firmware, and software.
