To build a platform for (high, sustainable) use, we need to know what will thrill users. Finding the right concoction of technology, functionality and design to delight users takes a thousand decisions, pivots and changes. The JSTOR Labs team has been using Flash Builds--high-intensity, short-burst, user-driven development efforts--in order to prototype new ideas and get to a user saying 'Wow' in as little as a week. In this paper, a distillation of a presentation I gave at NFAIS 2015, I will describe how we have done this, highlighting the partnerships, skills, tools and content that help us innovate. Until recently, the custom manufacture of equipment for laboratory or field experiments in soil science required appreciable know-how, and was extremely time-consuming. Technological advances in rapid prototyping and o3-D printingo in the last decade afford significant, and as yet untapped, opportunities to manufacture equipment in a very different way. In the present note, we demonstrate with two concrete examples that 3-D printing is not only a very effective and versatile technique to produce laboratory or field equipment. It also alleviates some of the restrictive technical constraints imposed by lathes and molding processes used traditionally, and it permits a much more efficient sharing of information among researchers. Given the tremendous advances in 3-D printing unfolding at the moment, it is anticipated that this technology will revolutionize the way we design, and especially replicate, experiments in soil science.

A large [...] Tissue-engineered scaffolds require an adequate three-dimensional (3-D) structure for cell growth and attachment. Solid freeform fabrication can provide the interconnected pore to induce the cell ingrowth, and electrospinning technique can make the nanofiber web with high surface for cell attachment. In this study, 3-D polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds were fabricated using a rapid prototyping plotting system coupled with an electrospinning apparatus. Scanning electron micrographs showed that these hybrid scaffolds had a regular microfiber structure with interconnected pores and a nanofiber distribution appropriate for cell attachment. Scaffolds were seeded with MG63 cells for in vitro study and implanted in the tibia of rabbit for in vivo study. The resulting structure also facilitated cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation as evidenced by biochemical analyses and confocal microscopy. Here we demonstrate the use of microstereolithography (MSL), a 3D direct manufacturing technique, as a viable method to produce small-scale microfluidic components for electrochemical flow detection. The flow cell is assembled simply by resting the microfabricated component on the electrode of interest and securing with thread! This configuration allows the use of a wide range of electrode materials. Furthermore, our approach eliminates the need for additional sealing methods, such as adhesives, waxes, and screws, which have previously been deployed. In addition, it removes any issues associated with compression of the cell chamber. MSL allows a reduction of the dimensions of the channel geometry (and the resultant component) and, compared to most previously produced devices, it offers a high degree of flexibility in the design, reduced manufacture time, and high reliability. Importantly, the polymer utilized does not distort so that the cell maintains well-defined geometrical dimensions after assembly. For the studies herein the channel dimensions were 3 mm wide, 3.5 mm long, and 192 or 250 [micro]m high. The channel flow cell dimensions were chosen to ensure that the substrate electrodes experienced laminar flow conditions, even with volume flow rates of up to 64 mL [min.sup.-1] (the limit of our pumping system). The steady-state transport-limited current response, for the oxidation of ferrocenylmethyl trimethylammonium hexaflorophosphate ([FcTMA.sup.+]), at gold and polycrystalline boron doped diamond (pBDD) band electrodes was in agreement with the Levich equation and/or finite element simulations of mass transport. Life-cycle management (LCM) has been employed in the management of construction projects for many years in order to reduce whole life cost, time, risk and improve the service to owners. However, owing to lack of an effective information sharing platform, the current LCM of construction projects is not effectively used in the construction industry. Based upon the analysis of the information flow of LCM, a virtual prototyping (VP)-based communication and collaboration information platform is proposed. Following this, the platform is customized using DASSAULT software. The whole process of implementing the VP-based LCM of projects is analyzed via the application to a real-life construction project. The advantages of implementing a VP-based LCM are also discussed and, from a simple case study, it is demonstrated that the VP-based communication and collaboration information platform is an effective tool to support the LCM of construction projects.
