PROTOTYPES, MAGNETIC fields, NEUTRON sources, and PARTICLE accelerators
Many applications using accelerator beams require a nearly uniform beam distribution at the target. A nested structure magnet producing a step-like magnet field has been proposed to transform an originally Gaussian or even irregular distribution into a more-or-less uniform one at targets. In this paper, the prototyping of a step-like field magnet is presented, which is based on the application in the China Spallation Neutron Source where the magnets are used to obtain a uniform beam profile from an initially irregular distribution at the spallation target. It includes the magnet design, 3D magnetic field calculation, prototype fabrication and field measurement. The prototyping confirms the technical feasibility of the magnet structure and the magnetic field quality consistent with the field calculations. The design improvements are discussed from the prototyping experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
RAPID prototyping, NEW product development, MASS production, MANUFACTURING processes, and ECONOMIC conditions in China, 2000-
The article discusses the future of specialized product development and rapid prototyping in China. According to British engineer Gordon Styles, who has launched a prototyping company in Zhongshan, China, called Star Prototype Manufacturing Co. Ltd., the 2012 economic environment in China is good for the production of prototypes and low-volume, customized products rather than mass produced ones. Comments from Styles on Star Prototype's precision manufacturing are presented.

China's Guangdong Yizumi Precision Machinery Co. Ltd. is bringing a 3D printing technology to K 2019 that it says is ready for small and medium production runs, not just the prototyping that additive manufacturing has historically targeted. Yizumi Chief Strategy Officer Hans Wobbe said the system uses standard polymers and filled and fiber-reinforced plastics such as nylon with 30 percent carbon fiber, which helps to speed up the additive manufacturing process. Yizumi debuted the SpaceA robotic 3D printing system last year at both Germany's Fakuma plastics show and the Formnext additive manufacturing show in Frankfurt. [Extracted from the article]

INTERNET marketing, INFORMATION theory, SECOND Life (Game), VIRTUAL reality, and ONLINE social networks
Second Life (SL) is leading three-dimensional (3D) virtual worlds working in an electronic environment. The residents have freedom to socialize, explore, meet people and build products and services. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the significance of communication and e-marketing opportunities in the SL virtual world. The theoretical background used in this study was communication theory and social system and media richness theory. Online conversations were performed with SL users to explore their communication behaviors and experiences to conduct marketing activities in Second Life. The findings show that initial capital investment, time engagement and quality of products were equally important in SL as in the real world. Moreover, advertising, customer relations, after sales service and consumer traffic are mandatory for e-marketing promotion. SL was found to be favorable for technological development, brand promotion, resource management, business strategy and prototyping. The synchronous communication is highly effective for managers and business practitioners in the real world. SL has a significant impact on individual Chinese users and the growth of China's internal market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMPUTER-aided design, RAPID prototyping, SPORTS tournaments, OLYMPIC Games (29th : 2008 : Beijing, China), and STRUCTURAL design
This article reports that swimmers at the 2008 Olympics will compete beneath a sea of steel bubbles created using computer-aided design. The Shenzhen Design Institute won the international competition for the $100 million Water Cube after a public exhibition and vote in 2003. The consortium used the findings of the professors' paper in the design of the building. It was all made possible by rapid prototyping and the latest in computer-aided design. To convey the idea to the judges of the design competition, rapid prototyping was used to physically model the complex structure. The loads were applied to the external cladding and transmitted to the structural members. INSET: Lord Kelvin: A life in physics.
INDUSTRIAL marketing, NEW product development, INDUSTRIAL design, RAPID prototyping, PRODUCT management, CASE studies, and FUNCTIONAL integration
Despite the acknowledgement of functional integration as an important driver of new product development (NPD) success and the growing recognition of the significance of industrial design (ID), the integration between industrial design and other functional units in NPD has been rarely researched. In this article, we examine the marketing and ID integration in NPD in the context of China. Mainly based on Cooper's (1994) stage-gate phases of NPD process and Gupta, Raj, and Wilemon's (1985) categorization of NPD activities, we develop a conceptual framework that identifies 29 areas that might require integration or where integration might occur between marketing and ID. Specifically, we investigate and compare the current and the ideal integration between marketing and ID perceived by the two functions. An analysis of data from 113 companies reveals that the current level of integration fell short of the ideal level of integration in all the phases of NPD. Both managers believed in the descending trend of integration along the stage-gate NPD phases and were dissatisfied with the current level of integration in all the NPD phases. Except for a few areas of agreement, marketing and ID managers showed significant differences with each other in their perceptions of the current and the ideal integration in most of the 29 areas. Despite the disagreements however, the two functions agreed with each other on the most important areas that require integration and achieved the highest level of marketing-ID integration. These findings suggest that firms should improve the marketing-ID integration in all the NPD phases and that management could improve the effectiveness of marketing-ID integration by prioritizing and focusing on the most important areas. Research and managerial implications, limitations, and future research directions are presented in the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMERCE, INVENTIONS, RAPID prototyping, COPYRIGHT, and CREATIVE ability
The author reports on creativity in China. He presents four reasons why China is becoming a fertile place for creative people. He points out that the country is very web-savvy and has a very small gap between concept and execution. Further, he argues that the lack of copyright protection makes it easier to create. He also notes that city life is very cheap for young people and says that helps foster creativity.

The TEC also enhances the company's process support in the areas of technology, research and training, prototyping, yield improvement and failure analysis.
CONSTRUCTION industry, PROTOTYPES, and PREFABRICATED house design & construction
Prefabricated construction is regarded by many as an effective and efficient approach to improving construction processes and productivity, ensuring construction quality and reducing time and cost in the construction industry. However, many problems occur with this approach in practice, including higher risk levels and cost or time overruns. In order to solve such problems, it is proposed that the IKEA model of the manufacturing industry and VP technology are introduced into a prefabricated construction process. The concept of the IKEA model is identified in detail and VP technology is briefly introduced. In conjunction with VP technology, the applications of the IKEA model are presented in detail, i.e. design optimization, production optimization and installation optimization. Furthermore, through a case study of a prefabricated hotel project in Hong Kong, it is shown that the VP-based IKEA model can improve the efficiency and safety of prefabricated construction as well as reducing cost and time.
